I'm using Microsoft outlook as my contact file and using pocket mirrow that came with the 7135 as the hot-sync. This seems to work OK for me, but everthing I look into now, I'm finding a better solution. What are my other options for hot-sync and how do they differ? Even though I've had my phone a year, I'm acting like a kid with a new toy.
Thanks in advance.
Glenn
The big ones seem to be the PocketMirror Pro and Intellisync. Only intellisync has a trial version, so take advantage of that, although PocketPro does offer a 30 day money back guarantee (which I used).
i found Intellisync offered me more flexibility with syncing only certain items. I sync at home and work and have a strange mix of items I want to see in either place and on the phone. Intellisync works very well for this. It ain't cheap.
As a long time user of Intellisync I am partial to it. I have used it to sync the Palm Desktop, Outlook and Lotus Notes and it works well. The ability filter data and Puma's willingness and ability to respond quickly to changes in Outlook and Lotus Notes versions are important considerations.
A major issue for me is Intellisync was the ability to sync with the native Palm applications such as address book, calendar, mail and notes.
There are some strong applicatoins such as Agendus which does an even better job in data creation than the native Palm apps and filtering than does Intellisync but they create their own databases and do not interact with the native apps.
My feeling is this is not an optimum use of memory space. This issue is gradually becoming less important as ROM, RAM and memory cards increase in size but it is an issue worthy of consideration.
You might perform a search on specific apps discussed on the forum. I know there hve been some pretty indepth reviews of PIMs and sync products.
The past five years I have found Intellisync to be very stable, works well with a variety of products and allows a significant amount of customizaton regarding the information to be synced.
Maybe you can answer a question only slightly off topic. I use Notes 5.1 as well. Intellsync didn't work for me. It doesn't sync all items on my calendar and Pumatech can't figure out a fix. I do have a Notes agent that pushes my Notes calendar to the Palm Desktop so I get my business events. It works VERY well with the added advantage that my personal/private events are only on the Palm Desktop and not within view of my nosey assistant. I also use Datebk5.
Here is the problem:
I'm trying to handle going from various timezones with this device. When I set my desktop to the new timezone, Notes and the Palm desktop work just fine but my Palm doesn't do right since the 7135 changes the time over the air automatically. The entries reflect the old time zone.
My current "solutions":
1. Hotsync prior to leaving one time zone
2. Change the Datebk5 "current time zone" to the new timezone. This makes the alarms work and displays the time of appointment correctly.
3. Before hotsyncing for the first time in the new timezone:
- change laptop to the new timezone
- change the Datebk5 home and current timezones to the new timezone
- change hotsync Datebook conduit to "Desktop overwrites handheld" (one time only).
From then on, I can hotsync normally until I change timezones again.
I don't think this is very elegant because anything I add to my handheld after changing timezones before the first hotsync gets lost. Also, I have to remember to do all of this each time I change timezones.
It would be OK if I didn't have to hotsync to pickup Notes Calendar changes. Datebk5 handles it all very well standalone.
I went through the same thing, but I didn't bother to change the time zones in between. As long as Notes and the phone are on the same time zone, they sync fine. So, I sync before I leave to know what my immediate appointments are. Then I sync in the new time zone when the phone's changed time - no overwriting required. This method doesn't make use of Datebook5's time zone capabilities.

Hmmmm.
1. In Denver with 8 AM MT appointment on Palm Datebook.
2. Fly to Chicago.
3. The 8 AM MT appointment still shows up on Palm as 8AM.
4. Alarm goes off at 8 AM CT but the meeting doesn't start for another hour.
How do you handle this? With Datebk5 timezone adjustments, the alarm goes off at 9:00 CT as it should.
Dlwilde did what I did. I was flying from home base in the central tomezone, to a client on Mountain time while syncing with division and corp hqs in the Eastern timezone. To make it worse Corp hq used Lotus Notes, Division hq used Outlook and my client was using GroupWise.
Trying to sync the timezones in three PIMs was making me whacko.
Early in that period I was syncing my phone with Outlook and Notes unsing Intellisync. It got crazy trying to schedule meetings in both systems. Sometimes I would schedule a meeting in both and would wind up with duplicate meetings on my phone going off at different times.
I finally was able to get my corp IT department to set up Outlook to sync Lotus NOtes and I scheduled evrey thing in Outlook based on the local time of the location of the event. I left my laptop on eastern time. Then as my phone automatically changed timezones my appointments were on time.
We never could get GroupWise to work play with OUtlook or Notes. It was unfortunate, because I really liked GroupWise.
I think keeping my laptop on one timezone was the key. Since the appointment times do not recalculate based on the timezone differences, I could set an appointment for 3:00 pm based on the timezone the appointment was in, criss cross timezones and as long as I was in the correct timezone when the alarm sounded I was okay.
You are in eastern timezone and schedule a 9:00 am appointment in central timezone on phone or laptop. Sync while still in eastern tz. Travel to central timezxone. Phone changes to central. Laptop stays on eastern. Appointment alarm on phone still goes off at 9:00 a.m. central.
Your laptop alarm will go off an hour early but who's listening to their laptop for appointment alarms anymore?
Is this what you are discussing, or am I missing what you are asking?

Not quite. A meeting scheduled on Notes gets the the correct time for everyone based on where they are. You set your computer to the correct zone and you'll get the correct time for the event.
If I am in ET, I set my laptop for ET. I want an "All-Hands" meeting set for 9 ET so I tell the sec'y to schedule it for 9 ET. She does that even though she is in Mountain Time and everyone will be invited at the right time:
6 PT, 7 MT, 8 CT, 9 ET
I have at least 4 meetings like that on my calendar each day. I sync all of the meetings and suddenly I have to go to Chicago. Let's get the laptop out of the equation for the moment.
My still Palm calendar entry shows the "All Hands" Meeting as 9 AM even though the Palm clock automatically changes back one hour. The alarm does not go off at 8AM CT as it should. (This without using Datebk5, BTW.)
Now put the laptop back into the equation. The laptop is accurate once I change timezones to CT. It goes off at 8AM as it should but, as you rightly noted, who is listening for that?
The problem is the Palm -- it does not reflect the correct time for appointments when I change timezones. This is NOT like the Palm Desktop and Lotus Notes. If I manually adjust the timezone on my Laptop, it will correctly adjust all the calendar entries.
Now with Datebk5, I can change the timezone (Pref-PDA or within Datebk5 preferences) and it will adjust alarms and the display.
However, the base data does not change. This is where sychronization becomes a problem. When I sync, the data is correct from the laptop but I can get dupes if I don't let the Desktop overwrite.
Got it. But, as long as both my 7135 and laptop have the correct time zones, I've never had any issues with dupes.
So, you are correct - if you change the timezone in Datebook5 until you get the opportunity to sync again, then you have to change the timezone back gain before syncing to avoid the dupes and don't have to set it to Desktop Overwrites.
But, as I said, I've never had any issues as long as both devices are set to the same timezone.
