Just found this site 3 days ago and learned more that I have in a year about my 7135. Love it..
I want to back up my phone info to my sd card. When I went to the backup buddy site, it looks like it is a hot-sync program also that will sync with my desktop. I'm happy with pocket mirrow that came with the phone. Can I use backup buddy or a simular program just to back up the phone in the field? I also have 3rd apps in the phone like a diet database that I want to back up also.

Yes you can use BackupbuddyVFS as a stand alone Palm app without having to sync to your desktop.
Both the free and commercial versions of BackupbuddyVFS allow the stand alone configuration.
The free version only allows full restore, while the commercial version allows you to restore specific files as well as a complete restore.
There are a couple of other Palm backup products, but I have used BB for the past five years and would not change if the gave the other apps away for free.
Just throwing in my two cents worth, but I'd strongly suggest that you take a second look at Backup Buddy for either Windows or the Mac (depending on your machine of choice). It backs up everything on your Palm, not just the applications and the databases that have conduits installed. This difference can be critically important in the event of a crash.
I would also heartily recommend BackupBuddy VFS for backups "on the run"... They've saved my posterior more than once!
If you are as paranoid about backups as I am, you might even want to purchase a second SD card just for backups that you keep separate from your phone (such as in your car or your luggage). That way you are covered if your phone drops out of your pocket on a ferry far from your home coverage area. You call your carrier to get a replacement phone shipped overnight, pop in the SD card, restore, and you are back in business!
I don't know if this is REALLY the case, but when I was using the Free backup buddy for the SD card, after doing a restore, my Phone Prefs and Palm Prefs weren't restored.
I have since bought the paid version of backup buddy for the card, and the last time I did a restore after a hard reset, my Prefs were back!

It saved my butt big time when my phone "glitched". I mean it was a bad one. It happened just one day after I loaded the program. Within 5 mins. I had restored everything. And I mean everything. It was the trial version. The next day, I bought the program. Its easy to use and very straight-forward.
It backsup to your SD card. I have set it to auto backup at 7 a.m. each day. Its way cool. You can also store the program to the SD card, and you can restore in the field, no problem.
Check it out (trial version avail), if you haven't bought another backup program yet.

I've been reading about how good BackupBuddy is since I got my 7135, about 9 weeks ago but haven't bothered to install it since I've never had a single hard reset or major crash (where data is lost). Still, I would like some protection as it will probably crash when I least expect it but I'm having a hard time understanding the various levels of protection.
I had two or three lockups in the first week or two of ownership that were corrected by pushing the reset button with no data loss. It does seem much more stable for some reason now as I haven't experienced any lock-ups in the last 6-7 weeks.
Here's what I don't understand. If I ever needed to do a hard reset, all my data would be erased, right?
Couldn't I just do a hot-sync with the desktop and this would restore the system back to the state it was in during the last hot sync? If so, the benefit of BackupBuddy is the ability to do a full restore in the field without access to the desktop?

You can restore any files that are in the Palm/username/Backup directory automatically using the Palm HotSync but that does not reinstall everything on your phone at the time of the hard reset, only data that was backed up at the time of the last hotsync. Any data changes on the phone after the hotsync will not be restored.
Also the hotsync process does not backup unsaved preferences. It does not backup the phone preferences. The biggest drawback about relying on the hotsync to restore data is one must do a hotsync with your desktop or laptop. If you are on the road and do not have access to same, you could have a problem.
If the above items are not issues for you, then you probably do not need a backup application.
If they are, then buy a backup program. All the Palm backup programs are good and they all do about the same thing. But the bottom line is get one if you feel your data can be at risk.
I prefer BackupBuddy. To be honest, I have not tried any other backup program. Some folks on the forum have stated that BB does not backup some of the phone preference, but I have been lucky because mine have been restored the few times I have had to use BB.
Another benefit of BB is you can backup EVERYTHING on you phone, including all the files in ROM and on your memory card.
Hope this helps you decide if you need a backup program or not.

I think I can live without it if there was a simple way to copy my address book onto my MMC so I could have a down and dirty back-up of phone numbers/addresses. I wouldn't need to update it often since I'm typically only adding one contact or so a week and it wouldn't matter if I lost the last two or three, I would generally know how to re-source them. I use the standard contact manager that came with the device.
Is there a single file I can periodically copy from the Palm to the MMC manually and do a field restore without adding additional software to my system? Judging by how stable my Palm has been I don't think I'll ever need to do this in the field but, better safe than sorry!
You can use your phone file manager to backup six files that start with Address that are now found on your phone to your memory card. I suggest creating a directory on your memory card called "restore" so you can find the files easily. Those files will only be as current as the last time you copied them.
If you need a good file manager check in the 7135 Files Section, I uploaded a zip of Filez earlier today.

That sounds good. I assume the file "Address Book" with the lock icon is the Address application and will not be deleted from a hard reset?
Correct, the address application, along with all the native Apps that came preinstalled on your phone, will remain on your phone after a hard reset. The data files and preference files will be deleted.
Thanks. Now I just have to test it. I'm a little reluctant to do a hard reset since I've never needed to do one and the phone is working so well (stable). I guess I'm a little shy after reading how unstable others 7135's are.
I bought this phone because I liked my wifes 6035 and I have a Palm application that I use to troubleshoot the fuel injection, ignition and ECU of my fuel injected motorcycle. I can use the application to adjust the rich/leaness of the fuel mixture or to retrieve diagnostic codes from the ECU and perform active tests on the fuel pump, coils, etc. This is a handy on-the-road diagnostic tool. Because I always bring a cell phone when I go on a motorcycle trip, and I always brought a Palm Vx to run this application, I figured the 7135 can perform both functions with only one device to keep charged.
With the Palm Vx, if I had to do a hard reset or the battery died, I would lose the application. With the 7135, I assume I can restore the application from the card.
The developer of the fuel injection software has been working with me to get the 7135 to connect properly to my motorcycles ECU via serial. Currently, it connects but is too sluggish to be useful. There must be some sort of timing issue or something. I think we will get it worked out over the next two months or so, it worked fine on the Vx.
It's really cool! How many people can use their cell phone to communicate with their motorcycle and ask it what's wrong?

BB does backup your data and apps to your memory card. The commercial version also asks you if you want to make a copy of BB on your memory card so you can run the backup from your card if needed.
The commercial version of BB also allows you to configer the specific files you wish to backup (and restore) if yo do not with to backup the entire contents of your phone for some reason.
I was told that it's excrusiatingly slow to backup data (such as MP3s) from the phone to the SD card. Is there some other way to copy from the PC to the card?
Someone mentioned the Cruzer, but it seems that is simply a storage device that connects to the USB port. I'm looking for something that will write to the SD card from the computer.
Get one of those smart readers (Lexar 6-card reader about $20 at Walmart) that attach to USB port. I copy my MP3s to the SD card from that. Its MUCH faster than using the phones MP3 manager program! If you have a USB 2.0, it will be even faster!
