Breif history: I have a Palm IIIC, got a new computer, the palm
was no longer compatible. I saved my "Palm" files to an external
hard drive. Got the new computer, got the new palm, 7135.
I can't get my files back into the palm software program.
I have been on with tech support, we tried pasting the old
files into the new folder. Didn't work. They actually recommened
this site hoping someone out there figured this out for them-
selves. PLEASE can anyone help. I am mostly concerned about
my address, datebook, and todo files.
Let me know if anyone can help.

What version of the Palm desktop software were you running before? I think the files are different formats in some of the Palm Desktop versions.
You might have to install the old Palm Desktop onto the PC, then maybe drop in the files, then install the new Palm Desktop over the top to get the files converted.
I had already upgraded the desktop on my PC and my wife's PC, so switching from Palm V to 7135 for me and III to V for her was just a simple hot sync.
I tried what you suggested Dennis. I reinstalled my 3.1 software
version. It automatically synced with my 7135 software,
and became version 3.1, but I
still can't figure out how to bring my old files into it. I am not
all that great on computers, so I do best with specific instructions.
I took the file from my external drive and copy & pasted it to the
palm folder under my C: drive. Is that right?
I know the files are all in my external drive. I can see them.
Should I uninstall the 7135 software and run only the 3.1, and
try again?

You might want to try to upgrade to Palm Desktop 4.1. You can get it from Palm Gear.com. I had no trouble migrating my old files to my 71. Give it a try and look in the files in this site.
Also, in a recent HandHeld Computing Mag, I saw this very issue addressed. If you have access to this mag, check it out. Somewhere, I have it and if I don't see a remedy posted for you, I'll post it.
I downloaded the 4.1 version and found that I could locate
the file in the palm folder and "Send to" the palm Quick Installer.
But it sends it to the portion for the expansion card and not
the section for the handheld. I tried dragging the files up.
No go. I also tried syncing the files to an expansion card.
Also, no go. Any other hints. You guys are helping me more
than anyone else has been able to. I appreciate it!

Donnita, do you have your old computer? Because that is were the registry information is which is necessary for the desktop software to identify your Palm IIIC files.
If you do have access to your old computer, then you could sync your 7135 to it. And then sync your 7135 to your new computer.
Otherwise, how long would it take you to read the information from your old files, and just hand input it into your 7135?
I gave my old computer to my sister and I pretty much
deleted everything. I wouldn't mind entering everything
by hand if I had to, but I am not able to even open
my old files.

If I understand this correctly, see if this helps. This is what I had to do with my palm Vx to get all the data to the 7135 from two PC's.
Open the palm desktop for the IIIc, click the address book and goto Edit->Select All then goto File->Export and name it address.aba and save to a floppy, Networked drive or what ever portable media you have. Repeate this procedure with Date, To Do and Memo using the appropriate file extension for each. Then goto your new PC and open your Palm desktop 4.1 for 7135 and select File->Import and direct it to the files you made in the previous procedure. All your records should import with no problem, then you can do a hotsync to to 7135 and all should be well.
I'm not totally sure if you did understand correctly.
I only have my new PC. My palm data was all saved on
an external hard drive. My palm os was deleted. When I
reinstalled it for my new 7135, I found I could not bring
those files from that external drive into the new palm os.
Or any other palm os for that matter, ( I tried 3.1 & 4.1)
I can open my external hard drive and find the files, no
problem. I did kind of try what you said, about exporting,
renaming and burning the files. But it didn't work either.
Again, I am not the smartest person on a computer!

Great, you do still have access to your old computer.
Most likely when you deleted palm desktop on your old computer, the registry information was not. For example, if you uninstall and reinstall the palm desktop, unknown to you the registry information is not removed. That is why when one uninstalls the palm desktop and then when you reinstall it you have to use the very same name for the handheld device.
If you reinstall a palm desktop back on your sister's computer, and transfer the files from your storage to that computer, then your will be able to open them up. Then (on your sister's computer) setup the desktop for a second handheld device (your 7135 with a different name) and sync the information to it. Take your 7135 back to your new computer, sync with it, and you are done.
I'll try to explain. When you first time sync a handheld you have to give it an identifying name, and your Windows Operating System is altered to make changes in the registry to store and manage the identity. This information is not removed when you delete the desktop on purpose or by accident. This is necessary for the computer's operating system to open up those files and display them in the palm desktop window. Since your Palm IIIC is dead, your new computer can not alter it's registry to be able to work with the files you saved. The missing information is still on your sister's computer operating registry.
I'll try what you said. My sister lives over an hour away, so
I'll probably have to wait until the weekend to get to it.

Hey, I finally got it to sync.
I took my external hard drive off and put it
on a computer that was compatible with the
IIIC. Got that one back up and running and
got the 7135 synced to it. Whew! Took many
hours and my datebook didn't want to sync.
But I got my datebook back on the IIIC, so
I'll just beem it!

be careful now that you have old palm data on your hybrid 7135. you may have inadvertently synced over legacy files and data that may not be understandable to the 7135.
now that you have your old data back.. i would rename my backup and archive folders to something else and then do a full reset of the 7135 to return it to factory specs, do a virgin sync to regenerate a new backup and archive folder (do not install anything at this time), THEN manually cut and paste your addy book, to do list (bascially the PIM infomation, no 3rd party apps) to your shiny new 7135. then you can install apps normally. this ensures you dont get any pesky files to install. a little work to do, but this will save you grief down the road.... the archives will prove that... :drink3
If you have hot synched the 7135 with all the PIM information to the current Palm desktop, then go into your Palm[username]Backup folder and erase all the files there. Do not erase the folder, just the contents.
You may first choose to copy the files to another location, "just in case".
Next, do a hard reset of your 7135.
Then, Hot Synch the 7135. Only your PIM information will be installed.
You can then install any third party software item by item as you choose.

Right, Schavlan, a good explanation on how to edit your backup folders.
The reason you don't want to just delete those folders is that they are managed by the information in Registry which is only created on the first hotsync, and is the identifying security info for the hardwire handheld and the name you assigned to it.
Should you delete those folders or want to change the name of your handheld, then you have to use your 'regedit' (Registry editor program for Windows) and delete the Registry entries under U. S. Robotics. (US Robotics use to own Palm OS program, and this is the only place you will find their name still being used.)
Just delete the US Robotics line and the nodes below with the Palm information will be deleted, too. Then in your desktop you will notice the highlight allowing a name change will be different, and then when you hot sync it will be as if it is your first hot sync; your can then rename your handheld --- the Registry entries will be recreated along with backup folders for that handheld and new name.
Congratulations, Donnita, you are the smart one for saving your files in the first place.
