Using Modem on Infared Connection?

Hello,

I just bought a Tablet PC that includes an infared port. Does anybody know if it's possible to create a modem connection over infared? I doubt it would be able to match the 3g network speeds, but it should be able to send/receive a fax.

Thanks,

That's one of my projects for the week... I'm modifying the fax/modem program to work over an IR connection as opposed to a serial connection. I'll post it as soon as it's ready.

I thought there was a hardware reason why both the Infrared and Modem parts of the phone didn't work at the same time. I'm looking forward to seeing your results.

yep, i was under the assumption that the Ir port is totally seperate from the phone side and they dont "see" each other and thus cant be used to hook into the modem on the phone for a data connection...

I've noticed this too. I can't use my MicroInnovations IR keyboard while using my 3g connection. What was the technical explanation for this? I had heard previously that it was a driver problem/Palm OS limited...

When I had a 6035

I know it wasn't possible to use a keyboard while on a data call, because the (dragonball?) processor only supported one serial device i/o at a time. saddened to think this must be the case with the 7135.

I was able to hotsync over Ir. I was unable to connect via tcp/ip over Ir. I would not rule out the possibility of using the phone as a modem over Ir.

Sorry for not posting this sooner.. I got the app functioning properly, and then my 7135 crashed, and I lost the backup. I did get it to work, and it's pretty easy.. there's an internal modem port and IR port on the phone, and all I did was create a small app to route information from one back-and-forth to the other. I'll try and rebuild this week.

I've checked the technical documentation and the APIs and the general word is that the IR port cannot be used at the same time as the phone. I have an IR keyboard that works well, but cannot be used at the same time as I have an EN connection on the phone.

The serial port works, or you could not use the phone as an external modem, there was a serial to IR redirector for older palms, any way to make this work?

If someone can prove me otherwise, i'd like to see it. The core OS and HW doesn't support it. If anyone gets it to work, it would be an additional layer on top of the Palm OS that routes the data, essentially making the IRDA and Modem to stop talking to the Palm OS, as it is latched to them and won't let them talk through each other except for using an external phone/modem as the 7135's modem (just like a regular Palm)

Any progress on this issue? Has anyone been able to establish an Internet connection from a PC or another Palm to the 7135 using the IR port?
