Earthlink Wireless Service

Anyone try this?

http://www.earthlink.net/wireless/palm/sysreq/

Component System Requirements

Desktop Operating System Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT 4.0, XP w/ Internet connection
Desktop Software Palm Desktop for Windows v.3.01 or higher
Supported Handheld Devices Palm OS 3.5, OS 4.x device with wireless Internet access including:
Handspring Treo Series (180, 270, 300)
Kyocera 7135
Palm Tungsten W
Samsung i3XX series

Handheld RAM Required 2-3MB minimum

The one new thing this service seems to add is the ability to view PDF docs without translation (I think).

I tried an earlier version a few months ago but I did not like it. I really didn't gain anything from simply downloading my Earthlink e-mail messages with SnapperMail or Eudora.

Howeverm this was an early version and, in fairness to Earthlink, "technically" my Kyocera 7135 was not supported.

Coincidentally, I found the link to the palm wireless service the same day you posted this note, Beryl. I have been trying to sign up for the service ever since!

Apparently, this is way down the earthlink totem pole, as they wouldn't offer phone support. (I had some trouble signing up--after filling out the form, I'd hit continue, and my form would come back at me. no error message. I tried to get live chat support and waited about 40 minutes till I gave up. I emailed for support and got a fine form letter apologizing for my inconvenience and suggesting I call customer support. I called customer support who were incensed that I should be told to call. Bottom line, they said, is this is a "low fee" product and it's strictly online support. "oh, and make sure there are no dashes in your phone number. goodbye." He was in a big hurry to hang up. ok. so i made it to page 2 of the sign up.

two days later... I think I've finally signed up. At least I got to a screen that congratulated me for my accomplishments. However, I was told I'd get a confirmation email and since the screen said little else, I assumed the software would arrive as a link in that email. You know how when you sign up for something online and they say you'll get a confirmation letter, then you get one in, say, two or three minutes? Twelve hours later and I haven't seen one. Hmmm.

It seems like a great solution to me. Editable email attachments and corporate email access on a month by month basis instead of a year contract. If the email client looks good (i'll miss snapper) this might be a great thing.

But, we may never know...

I just got the email notification. Hilarious! here's an exerpt:

"At this time, our CorporateLink behind the firewall desktop redirector
product is currently not available. This will become available when the
earthlink.net email address becomes available. In the mean time you will
be given access to the Standard Edition product from the link below."

...when the earthlink.net email address becomes available...???

Is it just me or are the folks at earthlink having some trouble getting their act together? Not only did they torture me in the sign-up process for a product they don't have, they have some trouble communicating what the heck the problem is.

Does anyone have an interest in this product? If so, I'll continue with this rather painful process. If not, I'm happy to back out and continue having my corp email forwarded to a pop 3 and pulled by snapper.

It just seemed like a nice way to get behind the firewall and view attachments.

*sigh*

It sounds like the only thing that has changed since I tried it a few months ago is that now they list the Kyocera 7135 as supported. It didn't work (at least for me) then and it doesn't work now.

mama's_wired, I cannot speak for Beryl or anyone else but you don't need to "test" Earthlink further for me.

Thanks!!!

I'm through with it.

1. I'm considering other ISP options and don't want to remain locked into Earthlink.
2. I like Snappermail and the client they use seems to be either Versamail or InboxToGo (I can't tell by the pic).
3. When getting the service alone is that problematic, the support will likely be horrid.
4. They don't support anything but POP3 for corporate email so I wasn't looking to use that anyway.

I'm wondering how they can view PDF files -- what are they doing that nobody else (including Adobe) has been able to do?

All good points. I'm out, too, then. Ah, the search goes on. I would really like a simple corporate email solution with attachments capapilities.

Hey, snapper users: What do you use for attachments. Jpeg lite for pics, probably, but what about word docs? anybody figure out the pdf thing? I thought adobe put out some sort of mobile reader, am i mistaken?

SnapperMail 3.0 -- which will be available whenever -- will support MAPI. That would solve your problem -- provided your company uses a Microsoft messaging system (i.e. Exchange) but that's what most people use today, any way -- except there is no release date yet. To be honest, although I like SnapperMail now and think it is probably the best Palm OS e-mail program out there, it is the promise of MAPI support that keep me loyal.

I just hope SnapperMail 3.0 will work with Palm 4.x. I think developers are about to transition to supporting only version 5 (and later) releases of the Palm OS.

But that is a discussion for another thread.

I use Documents-to-Go 6, which supports native file formats now.

@ Mama
I've started a thread in the Palm OS Discussion Section and would appreciate your thoughts.

I use Snapper too. My office uses Lotus Notes and really don't know what protocol that is except that it is not POP3.

As a good forum member I posted a thread on the Palm OS Discussion section on DTG but no one is will respond there. Moderators, will you please move it here?

I just got a call from earthlink's wireless palm product manager. Too bad I was away from my desk. His message states that the corporate product will be released in two weeks, that I won't be billed till that time and that I'll get a free month of service. Sheesh. I hate to be drug on like that. We smartphone users are all about instant gratification, are we not?

Beryl, I haven't used DTG on this unit. I used it on my treo back in the day, but I don't recall having the trouble you mention. Maybe I'll load the trial and try to replicate... I'm obviously not doing any WORK today!:p

Lotus Notes natively uses a "proprietary" protocol called NotesRPC. It is TCP 1352. However, this can be changed in the notes.ini file.

Unless you can have your Domino servers changed at your company, the above information probably does not help you. However, I remember seeing a product that allowed Palm devices to "natively" connect to Lotus Notes. Unfortunately, that was some time ago and I do not remember the details.

Sorry I cannot be more help.

Thanks, William. That's good to know.

When I have to check Notes mail from my 7135, I forward the nonconfidential stuff to my personal POP address. For the most part, I've given up on receiving corporate email.

OmniSky rebranded?

Is this service basically OmniSky rebranded, with most (if not all) of the orginal content? Earthlink bought OmniSky a few years back, and some of the software was incredibly useful. Avantgo offers similar functionality, but Avantgo Mobile is still the red-headed stepchild to the offline sync process it started with. OmniSky was designed from the top to obtain online data. I especially loved the ability to look up an address and phone number and add it to my address book. I know DirAssist does the same thing, but 555-1212 doesn't seem to keep up to date on a lot of business name changes...

I think you may be right. I was focused on the email aspect of this service, but I do recall seeing "omni" somewhere: was it a billing code? or maybe in one of the html addresses. I think I'll just hang on and see what happens with this service. I plan on giving the product manager a call today. I'll ask him if this is omni redux.
