I am a citizen of Los Angeles, and my DREAM for 4 years of wireless palm ownership is to get those CalTrans traffic maps on a color palm pilot in real time while on the road.
One of the first things I did when i got the 7135 was try to make that happen, and I have some options for you.
First, there's my website, open to the public, at
http://www.warrenernst.com/traffic
This page has links to all the Caltrans Maps for Southern California. Actually, it has links to HTML files on my server that add some special tags to the caltrans graphics.
Secondly, you need a web browser that can handle graphics. Some work better than others. EIS web totally fails. EudoraWeb doesn't do graphics.
AvantGo, Blazer, and WebPro work, but the resulting traffic maps are tiny and cut off somewhat. If you have good eyes and already know the freeway system, then these wil do.
Xino can read the embedded tags I added, and will stretch the graphics vertically, and cut off some of the excess horizontal. The result is a distorted, but much more readable, traffic map.
FireViewer can connect to the site with its (poorly publicised) built-in browser abilities, AND can display the map full size, requiring you to scroll around the map. This would be the perfect solution except for one problem: FireViewer is very unstable, and either refuses to connect, OR crashes after downloading and during decompression of the map about 25% (or slightly more) of the time. When it crashes, you need to do a soft reset and try again, and it usually works, but it is a pain when you want a traffic map NOW. When it works, though, it is most impressive.
Anyway, I hope you guys find this helpful. Bookmark it in your web browser of choice and start avoiding those jams.
