SMTP server for use with 7135? (NOT airbridge.net)
I'm attempting to set up my 7135 for inbound and outbound mail. I've got the POP3 side covered, but I need an SMTP server that will reliably work for me.
After perusing old posts, I called the Verizon Wireless data group in search of an airbridge.net account. They sent me to a person in the Mobile Office group, who politely informed me that VZW has stopped offering airbridge accounts ("at least 60 days ago").
I tried using mail.airbridge.net as my SMTP server anyway, and it worked... but I'd like to find a server that I could use in a more officially-authorized manner. Free would be ideal, but if that's unrealistic, then "cheap" would be a close second.
(If it makes a difference, I'm in Massachusetts, and I am an AT&T Broadband customer -- but I suspect that accessing an attbi.com SMTP server via a phone on the VZW network would be frowned upon.)
I don't know what ATT offers but look for a "relay" service though them or a hosting company. I use www.pair.com and they have an SMTP relay I can use. Once I "authorize" myself by checking for email, I have a set period of time (I believe it is 15 minutes) to sent out through the relay.

Otherwise known as "pop before SMTP." A better method is SMTP AUTH; best is SMTP AUTH over SSL.

Any suggestions?
You could pay a one time only fee to set up an SMTP only FastMail account. Do a Google search for FastMail. That will find the site for you.
You also get pop3 mail and an smtp server which you can use if properly configured. It is sometimes slow delivering when not logged onto its service. As good/bad as airbridge.
Verizon may have stopped offering full email accounts with airbridge -- I have no idea -- but the SMTP server mail.airbridge.net works fine with any Verizon data connection (1X or Q2N). It is "official," "authorized," and as far as I know going to last indefinitely.
You should talk to the Verizon Mobile Web support group if you doubt this: 888-258-7863. They're the ones who know what they're talking about.

This is true, however, I have read multiple reports on these forums that it sometimes (under some circumstances, possibly related to geographic location) asks for a username and password. With an airbridge account, I could just use my assigned username and password. Without them, I could be out of luck.

Actually, I did that first. It was someone in the Mobile Web support group who informed me that the Mobile Office group were the people I needed to talk to.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone. I'm using myrealbox for the moment, and I'm investigating budgetdialup. (I actually have other uses for that service, so it may solve two problems for me.)
If I come across any other useful alternatives, I'll post them here.
Another inexpensive way to get an SMTP server is to get a domain name and hosting/email with www.arishost.com for only $30/year!
it uses the pop before smtp security with Mac and Palms, so you just check your empty email account before sending mail, and you can then get a domain name/webhosting with your own personalized name. The free 5 email accounts that come with your service can be set up to send incoming mail to your regular mail box, and you don't need to activate all 5.
I set up my site www.juniperclinic.com with them. I can now send email through them using any return email address that I want to use. I don't have to use my juniperclinic email address for replies, I can use my hotmail address instead, or my usa.net address for replies, etc.

For those just finding this thread, Novell is no longer signing up new customers for myrealbox. The service exists to Beta test Novell's mail server software, and they have enough users to satisfy that need now.
For what it's worth, I've been using SMTP.com's server. Its $50 per year and works great. SMTP.com exists just for people like us who need an outgoing server that will work with our phones.

Also the reason why I suggested an account at the FastMail.fm site. It's $14.95 one-time-only fee. No more to pay if you only need it for SMTP (there's lots more functionality besides that, too).
I use runbox.com, and I am able to send through their smtp server using snappermail. $30/year. You can find out more info on runbox and fastmail at www.emaildiscussions.com, where there are forums for each of the two services.

I have finally found a great replacement for airbridge. Go to www.softhome.net and sign up for their FREE email account (it takes about 5 minutes to become effective). Then set up your 7135 smtp for the following: mail.softhome.net; <your user name>@softhome.net; your password and set it all for port 2500 and PING before sending. My messsgaes have been taking about 30 seconds to either my normal email address or my pager. ENJOY!
BTW, per a techie at Verizon, Airbridge should be gone in a few weeks and there is "supposed" you be a new smpt for verizon users. I think softhome will do it for me..
Just had a nice conversation with a Verizon Tech regarding the airbridge.net account details. He tells me similar information that has been posted. Airbridge is a third party company VZ contracted with to support smtp, etc. accounts for the 6035. They have not been reliable and many customers complain so... VZ is launching their own SMTP. Actually it was released prior to Christmas, yet had to pull back b/c some phones (not 7135) do not support SMTP authentication. He did mention the server being back online by 2/15. Details are as follows:
- smtp.vzwmail.net
- user name is mobile number
- pass is setup by creating a text messaging user account at www.vtext.com
After trying several services I found www.softhome.net. It is free and works very well. Airbridge WAS a gateway for the cellular techs to get info from their equipment, etc. According to Verizon, they are "supposed" to offer a gateway sometime soon but with serives like Softhome, who needs it.

I hope this helps... Joe
This is great info. I just tried and confirmed it's not online now, but hope it will be soon...
