How to tell which data network you are on

I'm far from an expert, but here is what I have figured out from connecting various ways.

If you connect to Express Network:
Caller ID screen says "Data Call"
Phone screen says "Packet Data"
"High Data Rate"
or, if dormant, it says "Dormant" on
the second line. I haven't figured out yet
if Verizon charges minutes when dormant.
Connection LED is green when displaying
"High Data Rate" and off when displaying
"Dormant"
Phone screen shows an icon on the top
row, near the middle, which looks like
a green down arrow next to a green up
arrow

If you connect to the QNC network:
Caller ID screen says "Data Call"
Phone screen says "Packet Data"
"Standard Data Rate"
No special icons show up on the top line
of the phone screen
The connection LED stays green the whole time
you are connected since there is no dormant
mode.

Does this correlate with other folks' observations?

Overall, I am very impressed with this phone. A few
hangs, but nothing a soft reset hasn't fixed.

That is what I get. I do have to change a script setting when switching from EN to QNC, but it works once I do.

Folks,

The way it works is this: if it is a QNC connection or an active 1X connection, you will see the phone handset icon in the phone app. If it is high speed (1X) , you will also see the up and down arrows icon. When the connection is dormant, the phone Icon will go away, and the arrows will be grayed out.

In my experience, if the connection is dormant, you are only a few Palm clicks away from sending the 7135 into lala land and requiring a soft reset.

The way the phone is supposed to work, you can make and receive calls in dormant mode, and theoretically leave the dormant connection active indefinitely.

GSM phones actually work this way. The 7135 has bugs. This is most certainly the reason why Verizon hasn’t released the phone.

Alltel doesn’t officially support 1X data speeds (though they are testing it). This is why they released the phone.

I could be wrong about this, but I don’t think I am…

The small print at Verizon's site seems to indicate that you might get charged minutes in Dorment mode. Until your first bill comes, I would just assume that you will be.
