The "browser" application is just a WAP web browser. Unlike the 1xRTT data functionality of the 7135, it uses circuit switched data like the 6035. It is the same WAP browsing you would get from any WAP capable handset. I use it a lot jsut because it uses the minutes from my plan, and is text based. Perfect for those stock quotes!
Usually after switching mobile phones, you have to have the mobile web department reset your browser session on thier server.
The other problem here is that you probably need to program the IP address for your carrier. Did you buy an ALLTEL specifi handset and activate it on the ALLTEL network? If so, the above reset should fix you up, and allow you to generate a new key. If you switched carriers, the IP addresses are probably wrong. THis requries more involved programming that is probably not known by your carrier how to do yet.

Just one piece of the many exciting things you have to look forward to by blazing the trail before the path has been made.

If you really think you need WAP on a smartphone, but don't want to pay Verizon $5/month for it, check out http://www.waptunnel.com/ for alternate access. Note: It is not a secure gateway, so use caution on financial sites, etc....
Personally, I don't think I will use any WAP sites once I can use EIS either on QNC or express network. There is only one WAP site I use regularly, and it is on my own server. Certainly won't need it anymore once I can use a real browser from my phone.

Do you mean I can call on any WAP enabled phone and access WAP sites via waptunnel without paying squat?
(see my first statement) Just airtime fees apply....
(see my first statement) nothing carrier specific to setup?
lol
Is this true? And what do I dial, 777?
Yes, no monthly fee. yes, Airtime applies. haven't done this on a smartphone yet, so not sure if it is different, but on my StarTac, didn't dial anything when using the Wap broswer. Just opened the browser and it connects to the gateway IP address.
There are some limitations as to which WAP sites you can visit. Like I said, it won't establish a secure connection, so some sites will simply refuse to connect, and on others you may be sending passowrds or financial data as clear text, but in general, this is a replacement for Verizon's Mopbile Web service. Note: If you want a "portal" type home page, you can use yahoo's or any number of others. More detail on the link I provided.

Thanks for the info, Alan. When I get my smartphone, I will likely rarely use WAP either. I use it a lot now since pulling out my Palm and cable is cumbersome.
I guess I've expressed how much I HATE MSN and how unstable it is on VZW. Maybe I can use this server instead until the 7135 arrives.
Has anyone actually used the WAP browser on the 7135 with Verizon? I've changed the IP address to point to the Verizon WAP server and have Mobile Web on my acount, but I can't connect to the server. The error I get is 'Service not available.'
I also get the same error when I try to use the free WAPtunnel service.
The phone is setup to connect via Express Network as a default (I tried using QNC instead and still got the same error).
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Andy
P.S. Why do I care about the WAP browser when I have 1x? Because it's there
It depends. The WAP browser can make a CSD or PPP connection to use the service. THis is defined by the carrier, and is programmed into the handset (you can't change it). If ALLTEL uses PPP for WAP, then your attempts to access Verizon's may fail sicne they use CSD. This is not the likely problem though.
IF you are absolutley positive you programmed the IP and the port right, have the Wireless WEB service, and have acalled them to have your server session reset, then I don't know what is wrong
What is the IP and port number you used? Oh and BTW, the WAP browser doesn't work over an exsisting data call, it has to start it's own......
The browser doesn't like a high speed 1x connection. I had one active once when I started the browser and it had to close it in order to proceed. So the browser is set to connect via CSD.
The strange part is that even WAPtunnel gives the same error message.
OK, just got off the phone with Verizon. It turns out I had the wrong IP addresses. Unfortunately, even the correct IP address doesn't work.
It may very well be that the method that is used to connect to WAP on ALLTEL's network is different than Verizon's.
If that is the case then WAP is the one thing that will not work until the phones can be reflashed with the Verizon software.
P.S. I've been amazed at the willingness of the Verizon CS staff to help debug problems on the 7135. They have the docs and have walked me through a few things even though the phone is not officially 'supported.'
Let me be the first to tell you all....there is not differnet software. It's the same for eveyone this time around The only factors that make the handset specific to a carrier are the stickers, settings, logos, etc. No more seperate software files for Spint, Verizon, ALLTEL, etc. They can just turn specific things on and off with the settings in programming (not the programming you can get to from the handset).
I was never able to get the browser working on the 6035. I signed up for MobilWeb in order to get the qnc dial up functionality so I think it would be cool to use the WAP browser if I'm paying for it anyway.
