The Holy Techno-Trinity - Starring Kyo 7135 as the Holy Ghost
Since everyone on this board seems to be a techno-freak, I was just curious as to everyone's favorite techno-gadgets. Maybe I can find a new toy to play with.
My Holy technotrinity is as follows:
1. Tivo
2. Turtle Beach AudioTron
3. Kyocera 7135
OK, so I'm cheating by putting the 7135 on already. I'll come up with a substitute. But I expect that the 7135 will ultimately make #1 on the list, but for now it is the Holy Ghost for reasons obvious to all.
1. ReplayTV with 160 gig harddrive with WET-11 wireless network connection and internet show sharing (I love it way more than Tivo) -- http://www.replaytv.com/video/replay...0_features.asp I cannot and will not live without this thing!
2. Creative Nomad Jukebox (with hacked 40gig harddrive) or Creative Zen -- http://www.nomadworld.com/products/ So far I have over 6,000 mp3s on it and I haven't even filled it up halfway. Every song in my life goes with me wherever I go.
6. The "Andrew Extensis" so that I could "cut the cord" and eliminate my home's landline phone service and just use my tons of cell minutes through an old digital StarTac added to my account. Works great and saves me $60 per month -- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...350666-0292125

Great Toys! OK, your wife is even more tolerant than mine. Now as a devotee of Tivo, you'll have to tell me why Replay is better, as I have never used it. I can tell you that I would throw my cell phone in the trash before I let the Tivo go out the door, but I am not yet a smartphone owner.
What have you hacked with the Nomad? I am ripping all my CD's to MP3 for use with the AudioTron and am about halfway through 1000 CD's which sounds roughly about the same size as your collection. The AudioTron is unbelievable for playing MP3's on a home stereo, but I would like to go portable as you have. Problem is, I have ripped all @ 192K VBR, which makes for larger file sizes (and worst of all won't be playable on the 7135) so I need a new plan. (hopefully something that can handle my bitrate and has about 80GB) which I don't think will be available for a while.
Powershot 40...almost bought it, but was holding out to see how the foveon X3 technology panned out.
Sandisk cruzer...willl definitely get one if the 7135 materializes.
OK, so it was more than 3, but so far you win! :mad
Not trying to win, just love discussin' gadgets with a fellow addict.
Some day soon when I have a little more time I will do a ReplayTV vs. Tivo off-topic thread. But despite my obsession with RTV, I should say that TIVO is very good too. Plus it is more of a household name because it has a catchier name.
I LOVE my PowerShot S40. It is so small and handy that I can even slip it in my pocket if I have to. My ONLY criticism is that due to its small size, the flash is slightly too close to the lens, which results in a larger than average number of red-eyes in photos. I remove them with software, but wish that I didn't have to. But of course if you have other lighting coming from other angles or you are shooting outside, then no red-eye.
My Creative Nomad Jukebox came with a 10 gig harddrive, but I didn't want to run out of space with all my mp3s, so I replaced it with a 40gig harddrive.
Kevin, I think that there is software out there for converting (batch recrecording) higher bitrate mp3s to lower. Then you could use them on your 7135. I ripped all my tons of CDs at 128. I'm not an audio technician, so it sounds like CD quality to me.
The AudioTron sounds nice, but since the Creative Nomad Jukeboxes has several audio outs, I just connect an audio cable frome it to my stereo (actually I keep the cord plugged into the back of the stereo at all times and then when I want to listen to my mp3s, I just plug it into the player and I'm set. It sounds excellent on my stereo and this way I still have portability. By the way, the best part of a mp3 jukebox, is that I can just sellect shuffle and listen to all 6,000+ tunes in random order. I could literally listen for weeks and never hear the same song. Plus I now enjoy songs on some of the CDs that I never used to bother to dig out of the closet.
And, yeah, my wife has given up on my. She just rolls her eyes when I talk about new gadgets. My birthday is coming up and she said, alright, which gadget will it be this time? At first I said the Veo SD camera attachment for our beloved 7135, but now I am not so sure of it.
D@mn I love gadgets! It has been fun chatting with you about them. GREAT idea for a thread here.

Oh, I know you're not trying to win...you just did it accidentally. That being said, I have been a moral/ethical person, so I know that when I die, I will be rewarded and sent to your house! :angel
The powershot does take great photos, and I'm still on the fence about it. Was hoping for a little price drop but it hasn't happened.
Do you know if there are drives larger than 40GB that will fit in the Nomad? I would love to just stick to the same bitrate, but I have already been looking at some batch conversion software that I know will do the job. Hate to have to keep two copies tho...just takes up a lot of space unneccessarily.
One nice thing about the AudioTron is that it streams from your network shares, so there is instant gratification when you download or rip an mp3. Also, getting the 'net radio stations on my home stereo has been awesome. Has all the standard CD-player type functions such as random/repeat etc., and can also play by Genre. Lots of nice features to cue up tracks etc. I even managed to get my wife hooked.
I think one of the best advantages is that for home use, you can use the existing hard drive space on your PC, which keeps the cost down. Plays most formats and bitrates too. 'Nuff said untill we start a gadget thread.
Anyway, as you know, it is great to put the CDs away, but you can take them in the car, and I can't so I need a new gadget. The 7135 may be just the ticket (with 256MB SD) but maybe a portable device with my whole collection would be a better solution.
Let me know when you pick out your b-day present. I'll be ready for the gadget thread when you are! :blue

Alright Alex! Did I know that you were a ReplayTV guy too? Sorry if I forgot. Way to go with the upgrade. Doesn't it make a huge difference. We should talk ReplayTV sometime.
Here are the Replays that I own (or have owned in the past)...
5160
4080
3060 (upgraded to a 80gig HD) - recently sold it on ebay
SS-2000 (upgraded to an 80 gig HD) - recently sold it on ebay
Me - Another Replay TV fan. We own a 2020 and a 4080. Enjoyed these products so much, I got turned on to Sonic Blue in general. Bought a Rio Riot MP3 player earlier this year, made by Sonic Blue. Love it. My husband has an Archos Jukebox and he is always lusting after my Rio Riot (wishes he had bought it instead). (I'm not familiar with the Nomad, so I don't know how it compares...)
Since the thread is "holy trinity", I'll throw in my HP Photosmart 1315 printer as the third. If I could have a fourth, it would be our Wi-Fi network, too.

Actually, I don't think I've mentioned it here before. I've been thinking about getting one of the newer models, but they're still a little pricey for me to do right now. I also enjoy not paying the service charge. We should definitely talk about ReplayTV sometime.

SH*T dude, thanks for reminding me....I thought it would be great to hack the audrey a few years back when 3com released it...however I did not feel like shelling out 400 bucks for it at the time. Since then I forgot about the Idea....
Wow- and you posted it with a link, how cool is that? I wanted to create a wireless remote for my mp3/movie server that I could use in my entertainment room, but I also like the picture frame idea. I am off to see if i can get an audrey from ebay!
At first I thought it was just propaganda for Microsoft's PCphone, but then he lists a bunch of negatives about it.
He seems like a really cool guy and sounds like some of us gadget collectors.
Boy does this guy need to know about the 7135. I emailed him to tell him about it. Then again, he is probably well aware of it and has just been waiting painfully like us.
