Several years ago my boss wanted me to keep track of how much I spend and how much I take in. He authorized me to get a computer so I did some spreadsheets, however as soon as I got a PDA I stopped using the computer for that data. I would say a $149 pda was a good ROI. I bet there's tons of businesses that run by the seat of their pants. They probably have rolodexes which are unsorted, and not kept up to date along with books of vendors business cards in a different place. So searching for a number requires digging. PDA has good ROI there too. Now, how to justify a smartphone other than for conveniance. The business I'm in doesn't require back end software to connect to a server, but I'm sure a lot of businesses have servers and would benefit from having employees being productive in the field with up to date data. ROI? All one has to do is compare the price of a smartphone vs. (pda+wireless sled+phone) vs. (laptop+wireless card+phone). ROI? I think it's pretty clear the smartphone offers the most ROI. The title of the article was just a teaser. Nowhere in the article is the word "dumb" used. I felt cheated.
Good post David. Having the 6035 has also allowed me to avoid the need for a laptop.
To me the underlying theme to most smartphone articles is that until they are "perfect" there is no place for them. People that feel that way are missing out. Just because they can't do "everything" doesn't mean that they can't make people much more efficient than they currently are. I don't know what I would do without my 6035.... and once the 7135 comes out it will probably be just a couple days before I wonder how I lived with out it!

I wish I could just charge the battery now, so that when the phone arrives, I can start playing with it immediately.
I'm guessing that we will all be sitting very close to wall outlets and using the detachable travel charge part of the sync cradle so we can play with the 7135 while it charges. Not until I can't stay awake any longer will my 7135 get a moments rest for the first few days!

Never underestimate Microsoft. They have a proven track record of going into a business with no knowledge and dominating. Aside from the Xbox business, this trend has been consistant.
Microsoft has a key differentiator that no one can compete: developer tools and support, not to mention the cash it has in the bank vault somewhere inside Gates' basement. I'm afraid that in the future Palm's outlook maybe gloomy. You can do more things on the Pocket PC platform than on the Palm platform. The only way to outmanuever Microsoft is to have solid developer tools and support. Thats is the key and Palm's only chance of survival.
