You know, I keep hearing complaints about the size of the Kyocera 7135. David Pogue's article in the New York Times is simply the latest, but there have been tons of people griping about the size in the Palminfocenter forums.
But the 7135 isn't that big. I'm currently using a Palm Vx, one of the smallest Palm devices ever made, but the thing is so fragile that I have to keep it in a neoprene case (I believe it's the Palm Glove III).
OTOH, the 7135 shouldn't require a case. The clamshell design protects the screen, and the metallic areas are reportedly protected with some sort of coating to resist scratches.
What's the point of all this?
Well, the Palm Vx with case fits just fine in my pants pocket. And while I have yet to hold a 7135, the reported dimensions make it: 1 inch narrower, 1.5 inches shorter, and the exact same thickness as my Palm Vx with case.

Well, you make a very good point. In my very humble opinion (everyone on this board can attest to the fact that I am VERY humble), it isn't size that counts, its function. I've carried a 6035 around now for over 1 1/2 years and, while passersby with their itsy bitsy cell phones might snicker, I'm quite content. Because I used to carry a cell phone, a pager and a pda. And this phone has replaced them all and improved my efficiency and functionality in the process. It's been great. What more could you ask for???
A 2002 RELEASE DATE FOR THE 7135...THAT'S WHAT MORE YOU COULD ASK FOR!!!!!

I'm surprised more people aren't expressing this opinion.
Tiny phones had great appeal initially for their cuteness, but let's get real, you need a phone which is ergonomic both in the resting position and in the position of use. I find a grown man speaking into a tiny chicklet using two fingers daintily embarrassing.
The 6035 to me has ideal dimensions, not so big that I can't pocket it in my pants or shirt pocket, not so small as to be embarrassing and uncomfortable to use. The 7135 may possibly be more difficult to handle but I'll see what more of you early adopters think about it first.
I think the size of the 7135 is just fine... no complaints here. The dimensions are almost identical to the Motorola Timeport (except it's almost 1/2" taller). Several people I work with have that phone and it's not big at all.
I think that possibly the best way to handle the 7135 in use is to hold it at the hinge... with your thumb supporting the top and your palm mostly on the bottom, but with your other fingers partially on the hinge as well with your index finger also touching the top. Hopefully we'll find out soon

Since my last post I needed to go talk to my boss about something. He has a Motorola Timeport. He was finishing up an e-mail, so while I waited I played with his phone and pretended I was holding the 7135. I think it's going to feel very comfortable to hold.... and I think that the antenna will help us hold it steady.
And in case you're wondering why I keep mentioning the Timeport... the 7135 is only 2mm wider, 1/3" taller, and the thickness is just a millimeter thicker (the only difference being that the Timeports thickest point is at the top because of the battery... so the 7135 will be somewhat thicker all the way to the bottom... but big deal).
I don't think there will be any compaints about size once we get it :boing

That's just how I'm holding the test unit. Thumb fits nicely between the flip top and the antenna, which adds security.

Cool! I think a lot of people have been thinking that they would have to hold it only on the bottom half and the top half would move when they tapped it with the stylus. But the 7135 is too small for that to even be practical.
Kyocera knows what they are doing!

I also prefer the closed-size of the 7135 to the 6035, because the latter is too tall. I wear it on the holster on my side, and if i brush against a chair the wrong way, it might get caught and break the holster. It's happened once on the subway when I was turning in my seat. *snap* went the clip, and the thing went sliding across the floor. My precious holster!

I actually think the Samsung i500 will be the smallest Smartphone out there - same size/thickness of a regular flip phone, but I'd still trade the size for the SD slot (7135 with a Bluetooth SD and/or 802.11 card is just about the perfect combo for me).

Speaking of height, how is the stylus gonna fit in the 7135? I just checked my 6035, and the stylus itself is about 80% of the length of the 6035.. are they going to use a shorter stylus for the 7135 since the phone itself will be shorter and thus not be able to hold the longer stylus?
Or is the 7135 (closed) going to be pretty much the length of the current 6035 stylus? (I don't have a ruler or i could check these things I suppose)
I don't think i'd want a shorter stylus than what we have now. (ok i'm nit-picking, but after hearing about the 3G/Sprint Vision plan mess, i'm probably not getting a 7135 anyway so i'm looking for "sour grapes" excuses )
Originally posted by KLiuLess No way the new stylus will be as long. The 6035 one is already longer than the closed 7135. I don't see this to be a problem though.
Me neither :boing
I guess it's probably about as long as the Treo's... I think they are about the same height?

Boy can I relate. I've snapped 3 www.mobilizenow.com holsters in exactly that way. The third holster was broken just a few days ago, so I am back into wearing my 6035 in its leather case until www.mobileizenow.com gets me yet another holster...

Yeah, but I really feel for those who break the actual 6035! Thankfully that hasn't happened to me. Did I just jinx myself?

Yep, you sure did... but I think you can un-jinx yourself using the "edit" button

I had couple of chances to play with a 7135 last week. Having it in my hand I can say it fit very well. It seemed smaller then I had imagined it.
The width is a perfect for a nice grip; I'd think anything smaller might become uncomfortable with prolonged usage.
The phone is alittle thick, but it adds to the solidity of the phone while open.
The stylus is shorter then I'm used to with the 6035, but I'll get used to it.
I liked the feel of the opening and closing of the phone. very smooth, almost pneumatic.
I'd say this phone was made to be used, not to be jewlery.
If anyone is interested the phone was a test model on Bell Mobility's network in Canada. The Kyocera rep is suposed to be back in two months for the launch of the 7135.
Unless you have a strong will I'd suggest not to handle the 7135 until you can purchase it. Believe me the withdraw is quite nasty.

Man.... you have me drooling here! From your description I can almost feel the 7135 in my hand.... I can picture myself opening and closing it. You're a better man than I that you were able to give it back.... I think I would've pulled a "John Q." and taken the whole place hostage! YOU WILL GIVE ME THE 7135!!! :drink1

Umm where is everybody getting chances to see and play with the 7135? Is there somekind of mailing list I need to be on?
