Basically I was debating whether to keep an I300 that I'd purchased, or to return it and hold out for a 7135. Who's laughing now? HA HA HA
Anyway, I'm all psyched about the imminent release, but I began looking at some very nice PocketPC-based PDAs recently, and feel somewhat cheated now (I'm doing a senior research and design project in robotics that I'd originally planned on developing for the PalmOS, but I require video capture, and simply no PalmOS-based PDA is equipped to handle such punishment). Ç'est la vie. So now I have to convince some very important people to buy me a couple of very expensive IPaqs. Either that, or whore out my project to Microsoft, and get funding from them. I just thought controlling my robot from my Phone/PDA/MP3 player would be really cool. But I digress...
The processors on those suckers are amazing, and the game graphics are phenominal (for a handheld). Does anything come close on the PalmOS? Please shed some light and make me feel better about my $500 investment!

Yeah, and that new NVX70 looks sweet!

I think the model name is NX70V. Too bad it doesn't have telephony capability. If it did and if it supported the CDMA protocol, I'd abandon the Kyocera-waiting-game and never look back. But that's all just a dream.
If my posts sound like I'm bummed, it's because I am!

Awwww.... poor Dave I feel your pain man
Well, I always get those Sony names mixed up. The NX70V is a thing of beauty. It does have enough as a PDA to make me consider something that is PDA first, phone second. I guess what blows me away the most is how awesome the screen looks. And the built in camera and big thumboard AND grafitti are sweet. Oh yeah, and then there is the Palm OS 5 and fast processor.
I think maybe I got a little carried away there. The NX70V is an awesome "toy"... but for practical purposes the 7135 is the real deal

Is this a master's project? Do you go to Carnegie Melon by any chance?
Nah, this is an undergraduate computer science and engineering senior design project for the University of Pennsylvania. I do have a friend though at CMU who keeps me privvy to everything that happens there, including with regard to the field of robotics.
If I had a startac and palm V, and broke the screen on the palm, but knew I was going to get some smartphone within 6 months, I'd get the cheapest palm (probably a $99) model, just to have pda availability in the meantime. Even after getting the smartphone, the cheapo palm could serve as a backup for emergencies. I wouldn't have gone the route of buying a $50 screen and opening the palm V with a hairdryer because I would assume that if I broke the screen, it's possible that something else broke.
By "video capture" do you mean stills or movies? If the latter, I'd get a cheapo $299 hi8 camcorder, transfer the clips to laptop or desktop via firewire. If you mean stills many of the upcoming samsung smartphones, i330, i500, i7xx? have external camera add-ons. One of the phones will have a camera on it.

At that time, the only thing I used my Palm for was to connect to the internet (through the StarTac). Since I already had $50 invested in the cable that connected the two (and that it was made specifically for the StarTac/Palm V combination) it didn't seem worthwhile to take another route.

Well, in all fairness, nothing else was broken prior to having opened it. That was a risk I was willing to take, and sometimes you lose. BTW, since I'm most definitely NOT investing anymore money into trying to fix it, any ideas what to do with it now?

I mean movies. I actually just found this sleeve for the IPaq that is PERFECT for my application:
The robot IPaq (or server IPaq if you will) captures video and calculates some fairly complicated formulas, and additionally serves the video to the internet. The user's IPaq (or client) connects to the video feed (in a customized application) and also accepts user input which is sent back to the server over the internet. The communication is done over a Wi-Fi LAN.
On the subject of servers, does anyone know of any PPC video server applications (preferably open source)?

Is your robot going to be a "battle bot"?
While these are fun to watch (and build too I bet), there's nothing particularly academic about sabotaging other people's research... So, no.
