Me again,
What is the mean of the 1x in the black box on the Phone Status Screen? And sometimes it changes to D. Carrier is Verizon Wireless.
It is weird I have noticed differences in my phone compared to my fathers. Both are Kyocera 7135 but one is from Alltel and the other is from Verizon. Like the GPS and 911 Location Icon is different, even though the setting are set the same.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
The "1X" is to signify that you are in an Express Network service area.

The other difference is that when Alltel released the phone, they didn't have a product comperable to Express Network. So the phone's not programmed to detect and reflect the existence of the high-speed network being available, only analog vs digital. If and when the Alltel phone is upgraded to the latest Verizon firmware and the PRL updated, you'll see the 1X on both phones.

Actually, firmware has nothing to do with it. It is a setting in the non-volitale memory. It can be set to show 1X even in the oldest firmware, and if the VZW tech who does your upgrade doesn't know to set it, it will not show even in the latest firmware.

I'm beginning to feel that the "1X" is just window dressing because, no matter where I seem to travel, the 1X never gets replaced by anything on my phone.

Curious. I did my own upgrade and I don't remember changing the setting, yet I get "1x" where I used to get "D" (in the Chicago area at least)...

I don't know if I've ever seen it change myself. Of course, I don't get out (of the immediate area) much... so that might have something to do with it

Hmm... Have you done every upgrade, or only the more recent ones? I changed the setting in my phone before ever flashing it, so I know it is a setting that can be changed with KWPST. And I flashed a couple of other peoples phones with the first firmware update that became available, and I had to change the setting for them, but perhaps the default got changed in later versions.

I've only upgraded the phone once, to SZ 1.0.29 and MZ 1.0.44. I don't recall changing that in the KWPST software, but if it's part of the process that was spelled out on SPS, then that's how it got changed (if the upgrade didn't do it)...

It was part of the instructions posted on SPS and other places.
