How do I setup the 7135 as a wireless modem for my PC?

Note that this is just for ExpressNet (EN) from a Win2K machine over the USB data cable connection; if it helps similar setups, like the Win98 & MacOS folks on this thread, or for slower dial-up connections, or for Serial modem connections, that's a bonus.

Start over. Delete (not just disable) from the Win2K Device Manager all Kyocera Wireless Modem devices that you may have set up, and all Kyocea Wireless Modem dial-ups you may have set up using Network and Dial-up Connections. (No need to delete your internal modem setups - just your Kyocera Wireless ones.) As a final cross-check that all Kyocera Wireless Modems are removed, go to Control Panel, Phone & Modem Options, and make sure there are no Kyocera Wireless Modems showing up under the 'Modem' tab.

Test that your 7135 is capable of establishing a 'Data Call' by itself. At a minimum, you should verify that the '1X' appears in the top left of your Phone screen. If you've already confirmed that EN sessions can be established on the 7135 when it's NOT connected as an external modem to a PC or laptop, go to Step 3. If you haven't, see other threads or call VZW to get through this. (My EN was set up automatically, and worked perfectly, when I activated my acct.)

Exit any & all applications running in your system tray that may compete for your USB or COM ports, including HotSync, ZoneAlarm, USB Printers/Scanners, USB hubs, etc. While conflicts are rare with some of these items, it's better to start with a clean slate approach if you're having issues.

For this step, refer to the instructions provided by Kyocera at HERE, except for the following difference: In step 14 of those instructions, select the 'KYOCERA WIRELESS USB Modem' driver in lieu of the 'Kyocera CDMA Wireless Modem' driver. (According to the very knowledgeable VZW tech supt person that helped me through all this, the Kyocera CDMA Wireless Modem driver and Kyocera High-Speed Wireless Modem driver that you see in the 'Models' box in this step are for Serial Modem connections. However, this FAQ addresses only USB, which is much faster than Serial and thus able to take full advantage of EN's high speed.)

Verify in the Win2K Device Manager that the KYOCERA WIRELESS USB Modem driver installed correctly. (If not, it's probably because of a port conflict, which is outside the scope of this FAQ, but the Win2K Help can tell you how to resolve these most of the time.)

Launch the Network & Dial-Up Connections window in Win2K, and set up a modem (using either the 'Make New Connection' wizard or by copying another modem) so that the Modem Properties are as follows:

a) Under the General tab, ensure that KYOCERA WIRELESS USB Modem is the only modem checked. Highlight it, and click on Configure. Set the Maximum speed to 115200, put a check all 3 Hardware features, and click OK. Finish out the General tab by leaving unchecked 'All devices call the same numbers' and 'Use dialing rules' (I prefer to have the 'Show icon in taskbar' checked though). The Area code box should be grayed out, but not the Phone number box, into which you should key '#777' (without the quotes).

b) Under the Options tab, check the boxes for 'Display progress while connecting' and 'Prompt for name and password'; leave the other two Dialing options boxes unchecked.

c) Under the Security tab, select the Advanced radio button, and leave the Interactive logon & scripting boxes unchecked.

d) Under the Networking tab, ensure that the 'Type of dial-up server I am calling' says PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet. Click the Settings button, and check only the 'Enable software compression' box, leaving the other boxes unchecked; hit OK. In the 'Components checked are used by this connection' area, uncheck all components except for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

e) Under the Internet Connection Sharing tab, leave the Enable ICS unchecked. Click OK to save all Properties settings, and return to the Network and Dial-up connections window.

In the Network and Dial-up connections window, highlight the modem you just finished setting up. Go to the Advanced menu, and ensure that Operator Assisted Dialing is unchecked. Select Dial-Up Preferences, and in the 'Enable Autodial by location' area, uncheck all locations. Toward the bottom of the dialog box, check the 'Always ask me before Autodialing' and 'Disable Autodial' boxes. Click OK.

Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon, and select Properties (or open IE, select Tools, Internet Options). Under the Connections tab, you want to establish the wireless modem you just set up as the 'Default' modem. To do this, highlight the wireless modem, click one of the two bottom radio buttons, and click 'Set Default'. Then click the radio button for 'Never dial a connection'. Next, hit the Settings button, and check 'Automatically detect settings', and uncheck 'Use automatic configuration script'. Under Dial-up settings, enter 1111111111@vzw3g.com (where the 1s represent your 10-digit mobile phone number) for your User name, and enter 'vzw' (without the quotes) for the password. Leave 'Domain' blank. Hit OK.

Check the 7135. It should still say 'Ready to Send' as the status. Clicking on the Settings button should give you a message saying that the settings for USB Modem cannot be set by the user. The Incoming Calls selection doesn't affect the outgoing modem connection one way or the other.

Now you're ready to test. Click on the modem icon in Win2K, and you should see a dialog box with your 1111111111@vzw3g.com user name and 'vzw' password already entered (though on my subsequent attempts, there was a password much longer than the 3-digit 'vzw' there; I presume that it's some kind of logon script that EN told my 7135 to tell Win2K to automatically append to the 'vzw'; regardless, I leave it alone, and it still works). Click Dial. You should see 5-6 messages flash across the status dialog box, such as Dialing, All devices connected, Verifying Username & Password, Authenticating, Registering with the Network, etc, before the connection is established. On the 7135, the 'Ready to send' status should change to 'In Use', and it will show a 'Data Rate' saying that you are sending and receiving at a high data rate. The Win2K system tray should have the connection status icon showing blinking lights; mousing over it should reveal the '115200' bps data rate.

When I checked the actual speed of my connection using www.bandwidthplace.com, it told me 120 kbps--above the 115200 bps that is the max that can be set up for the modem driver, but less than the max of 140+ kbps that 3G supposedly peaks at.

A couple related notes:

After disconnecting the USB cable, the KYOCERA WIRELESS USB Modem will seem to disappear, causing Win2K to reassign your wireless modem dialer to your machine's internal modem (if you have one). Don't worry about this - as soon as you reconnect the cable and phone in Fax/Modem mode, it will reappear.

Sometimes, between data sessions, Win2K will reset my max speed down to 9600 bps for no apparent reason; the easiest way to check is when Win2K throws the dialog box prompting for UID/PW, click on the Properties button, and reset it to 115,200.
