There seems to be a lot of confusion on what the backlight button on the 7135 does. Here are some simple rules.

To turn the PDA/Phone display off, quickly press the backlight button.

To turn the PDA/Phone display on, press any key
except the backlight button. Closing and opening the flip will also turn the PDA/Phone display back on.

To turn the backlight off (such as when you're in a call to save the battery), press and hold the backlight button until the backlight turns off.

To turn the backlight on, press and hold the backlight button until the backlight turns on.

If you want to make the keypad/grafitti area backlight come back on after it shuts off, press any key
except the backlight button. The CLR key works best for this.

Note: When the PDA/Phone display is off and you quickly press the backlight button, the PDA/Phone display and backlight will come back on and then the backlight will turn off immediately. You will have to press and hold the backlight button again to turn the backlight on. This seems to cause the most confusion.
UPDATE! The Verizon user that authored this FAQ got their phone flashed with newer software and the problem with turning on the PDA display on with the backlight button has been fixed. The backlight will turn on as well and stay on.
