How do I change the carrier logo in the 7135?

When you restart a 7135, you first see the Kyocera logo, then the carrier logo. This FAQ attempts to explain how to either remove, or replace the carrier logo. Thanks to a BUNCH of Smartphonesource users that suggested different tips that added up to this FAQ. If you find anything incorrect, please post a correction as a reply.

Removing the Logo

If you remove the logo and restart your 7135, you will see the Kyocera logo, first. Then the "powering up" screen without any carrier logo above it (blank screen) will appear.

To remove it, you can use a file manager like FileZ to delete the file CarrierLogo123.pdb. The file is located in the QCQT database and is 15.2k. If you want to be safe, you can just move it to an SD card and power the phone off and on again. The logo will be gone. If you reverse the process, it will be back again.

Using your 6035 Logo on your 7135

If you have a Verizon 6035 and want to change the logo on your new 7035 to be the same as the 6035, just beam the CarrierLogo123.pdb file from the 6035 to the 7035. You are given a choice of overriding the old file. You have to use a file editor (ie. FileZ) to do it not just the standard beam mechanism on the Palm Interface. In this case, the resulting logo on the 7135 will be greyscale, not color

The CarrierLogo123.pb file

The CarrierLogo123.pdb file is more than a BMP file. You can not simply change the file name to *.pdb and have it work. The file contains additional header information. The remainder of this FAQ discusses this more.

How do I use one of the logo CarrierLogo123.pdb files that are available below for download?

Download the file to a subdirectory on your PC.

Start the Palm desktop.

Go to Install section.

Add the Carrier123 file to the install.

Installed the file and Hotsync the 7135.

Or, you could copy it to an SD card, and use a file manager like FileZ to copy to the 7135.

How do you create a custom logo?

You should be able to convert a bmp to a CarrierLogo123.pdb and have it work. You will need a hex editor such as Hex Workshop and a simple paint program,

Create a 160x90, 8 bit, 256 color bitmap and flip it vertically so it is upside down and a mirror image when you are looking at it.

When viewing the bmp in the hex editor, the first 54 (36 in hex) bytes are the file header, the next 1024 (400 in hex) is the color table (256 colors x 4 bytes per color), and the rest is the image. (14400 bytes = 1 byte per pixel x 160 x 90 pixels)

Open an exsisting Carrierlogo123.pdb and the first 106 (6a in hex) bytes are the pdb header.

Replace the bmp header with a copy of the exsisting pdb header. You also need to flip all the entries in the color table. This is easy to do with Hex Workshop by going to tools / operations / byte flip / 32 bit unsigned long. Make sure you only flip the color table (1024 bytes, 400 in hex starting from byte 106, 6a in hex)

And that should do it! Save your new file as anything.pdb and hotsync it to your 7135.

If you have a Mac, it is reported that the Mac program (including OSX) GraphicConverter can export to PDB format (it is listed alphabetically under Fireviewer PDB in the list). This program is included free with all new Macs.
