Unhappy Driver trouble, TXDTA0C01 USB-serial cable for 6035, Windows 2000

Hi QCP-6035 gurus (if any of you still exist!),

I recently obtained a USB sync cable (TXDTA0C01) for my Kyocera Smartphone 6035. I don't have a driver CD for it, so I downloaded the driver from the Kyocera website (see http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/qcp-...ne/drivers.htm). I downloaded the package for Windows, btw (I'm running Win2k).

Following the installation instructions from the driver web page, I extracted the zip file to my desktop, then executed nsinstaller/NSInstaller.exe. After accepting the license agreement, it pops up a message saying "Installing on Windows 2000/XP". Before finishing, an error dialog pops up. It says:

---------------------------
Error Copying File or Folder
---------------------------
Cannot copy file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I investigated this by opening NSInstaller.ini and it seems that the problem is that the zip file is missing two files: ..\drivers\ser2pl.inf and ..\drivers\ser2pl.sys

Can anyone here please tell me how to obtain these files or perhaps there is something else I'm doing wrong? I searched for the files on the internet but have found many different versions and never the two files together.

BTW, the whole reason I'm dealing with the USB cable is that I want faster hot syncs. I'm not even sure that the syncs will be faster with the USB-serial cable. Information about that would be helpful too.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi all,

Well, I solved my own problem thru another venue: Kyocera online support (I was surprised that they responded!). I copied their email below. In short, the driver installation executable for this model of USB cable is worthless. You need to install the drivers one by one by manually right-clicking the .inf files and clicking "Install".

Unfortunately, I answered my other question as well: no, the USB cable does not speed up the HotSync. Oh well, I've lived with it for 4 years, I can live with it for another 4!!! I've seen people in this forum talk about having to upgrade to a newer PDA phone, but I'm still happy with my 6035. I use it for the exact same thing every day, so why upgrade? I guess you could say it was perfectly designed for my needs. And it's great for personal protection!

Dear Jason Fritz,

Thank you for contacting Kyocera-Wireless Technical Support. This email message is in response to your inquiry regarding installing the TXDTA0C01 drivers for your QCP6035 phone.

To install the drivers you will need to go to the directory where you un-compressed the files to. In that folder there will be a directory called "Drivers". In the Drivers folder there will 5 driver files called: kwc_bus.inf, kwc_vxd.inf, kwc_w2k.inf, kwc_wdm.inf and mdmkwcy.inf. You will need to Right-Click and select Install for each of these files to install the drivers.

If this response does not answer your question completely or if you have further questions, please contact us at the methods listed below:

-E-Mail: phone-help@kyocera-wireless.com

Excuse my ignorance, but does the 6035 even support USB? I thought it only had the serial port hardware (and infrared), but not USB?

Hi Dr. Dolittle,

Yes, the 6035 does support a USB sync cable (such as the TXDTA0C01 model I mentioned below). However, don't waste your time with it it. The USB cable is basically treated like a serial cable and does not have a quicker sync. Also the drivers are difficult to obtain and install. In other words, just stick with the serial or infrared sync methods.

Best regards,
Jason

Ok, I found the TXDTA0C01 online, but it looks like there is a serial-to-USB converter built into the cable, in other words, the phone still uses the serial interface, the cable just converts it to USB. But since the phone itself does not support USB and still communicates via the serial interface it makes perfect sense that it won't transfer data any faster. The cable is simply for convenience in case your PC or laptop lacks a serial port.
