I just went through this, actually. I got caught out in a rain storm, and my 6035 has started getting a bit flaky since then. Luckily, I pay the extra buck for the extended insurance. They said they would send me a replacement right away, but when I explained to them that Verizon wouldn't activate a 6035 because of the lack of GPS functionalidy (new federal law). The next phone they offered was a Windows Mobile model (Samsung, I think), which was admittedly a nice phone, but not much good for runing Palm apps. They looked around, called Verizon, and Verizon told them to send me a Treo 600. I explained that the Treo 600 doesn't voice dial, which my 6035 does (can't figure out *THAT* oversight). I told them the 650 does that, even though it's a $20 option, and they took my $50 deductible and put me on the list for a back ordered 650. Haven't gotten it yet, but that's my tale. Now this *IS* a damage replacement, and not simply "I want a new phone". I *AM* paying more for the extra insurance, and I have *NOT* filed a claim in over 5 years. The insurance company (lock/line) was nothing but accomadating, friendly, and helpful. YMMV.
As advised by a VZW employee when I had an issue with my 6035 but did not carry insurance.
I placed my phone in a vehicle cupholder that happend to have about an inch of water in the bottom of it. It sat there for about an hour before I realized that it was sitting in water.
I was advised to buy the insurance coverage for my phone and go on about my business phoneless for a month to let the coverage get established. This was inconvenient but I did not have the money to replace my phone. The next month I filed a claim and they sent me at the time a new 7135. My 7135 works great and I have had none of the problems of other users. My 6035 was always a little questionable though.
For you:
Go to VZW and explain to them your concern with the fact that the 911 feature of the 6035 does not meet federal FCC standards and the fact that the 7135 is no longer supported by Kyocera and request a current supported and FCC complient 650.
OR
1. Buy the insurance and use your working phone for the next month.
2. Complete back up and synch of all of your important data.
3. Let it get wet
4. Go into the local VZW store and let them know that you need to make a claim.
5. Call the insurance number they give you and make sure that you let them know that the 6035 is no longer legally able to activated in the US and that the 7135 is no longer being supported by Kyocera and request your new 650.
Verizon has been replacing the 7135 with 650s like mad because, as they claim, the 7135 has alot of bugs in it that mess up their system. Funny, but there are aLOT of phones they released & later regretted giving the seal of approval due to poor system performance, but only the 7135 is being dealt with this way. Personally, I believe its because the 7135 was the 1st 1X data phone, and in order to get 1X recognized, they marketed it to the 1st 7135 users as PART OF THEIR PLAN MINUTES instead of per KB. Then recently, I suppose the big guys realized how much $$ was being lost, so in an affort to get that revenue for data usage, they are willing to lose some $$ per 650 in order to get it back when they convert the user to a $60/month data plan. Because of their greed, and the fact that the 6135 can only connect @ 14.4KB/s, not the 60KB/s connection 1X uses, they will probably not honor the "drop of a hat" replacement the 7135 users are getting.
Of course, some escalation rep may bite if you tell them you are interested in the $60/mo data plan, because they will see that the data profit will take care of the phone cost in about 5 months. Thing is, you would call back about a week later & change the plan to the pay-per-use plan, and simply not use data at all, since the per-KB charge is extortion, and it appears there is no way to connect at the slower speeds using plan airtime, like the 6135 & 7135 can do.
*sigh* well its a sad day. The 6035 has been going like the energizer bunny since 2002. Started flaking out a few weeks ago and had to get a replacement. So I'm now a treo girl a 600. Looks brand new and seems to be doing OK. Have a few things to work out.
For those of you who still have the 6035. I have a few things I don't have to turn back in, email me and I might be able to work something out. Also have a lot of ringtones.
My Verizon Treo 700P just arrived. I managed to skip upgrading to color with the unreliable Kyocera 7135 and the Treo 600. I almost bought the Treo 650 after the memory patch was released but then realized that EV-DO would be worth waiting for. Now I have to go home and setup a new cell phone for the first time in five years!
I will keep the Kyo 6035 in a drawer with my Handspring Visor
