Make sure hotsync is running on your laptop. also check that your IR port is indeed on (or activated). make the connection setting for your phone "IR to PC" (in preferences). set the phone about 8 inches away from the port and start the sync.
You must set up the port on your pc or laptop. Then goto your sync setup on your phone and select IR. It should sync, but it will take longer to sync via IR.
Just in case you didn't know, when you are IR hotsyncing with your laptop, the way you start the hotsync once you have your IR port turned on and hotsync manager running on your laptop is to tap the big hotsync graphic in the hotsync manager on your 6035. I know it may sound obvious, but it took me a bit to figure out that's how you start it, since with the cradle I always just hit the little button.

The same thing we do every night, Pinky...
I had IR sync working fine between my laptop and my 6035 but now when I start Hotsync on my laptop I get "socket error 8197". Should I just re-install the kyocera desktop software? If so , where can I get it online....if at all.
One additional note - the PC's HotSync software needs to be set to use the IR port.
Right click on the HotSync logo that is on your taskbar, and select Setup. Then click on the Local tab, and be sure that the Serial Port selection is changed to the correct port number for your IR port. On my computer the IR port is COM4, and the serial port is COM1, which I need to select when I'm using the cradle.
OTOH, the phone seems to sync fine regardless of whether "IR to a PC/Handheld" or "Direct Serial " is selected.
I started getting this socket error: 8197 message after I had to repair the XP installation on my HP zd7000 laptop. After updating my Palm Desktop software to no avail, I finally fixed the problem by removing the IrDA Fast Infrared Port from the device manager and forcing the system to rescan for devices. It occurred to me to try this because I remember seeing an InfraRed port in the list of connections on the HotSync icon in the SysTray. After the problem started, that connection option was not available.
Do this by:
1) Click on the XP Start button
2) Right-click on My Computer and select Manage
3) Click on Device Manager
4) Right-click on IrDA Fast Infrared Port (under Infrared devices) and select Uninstall
5) When the system is done removing that device, right-click on the computer name (at the top of the list) and select "Scan for hardware changes" and follow the instructions
6) Once the system settles down (i.e. reinstalled the driver) try loading HotSync Manager again. If it's already loaded, Exit out and then relaunch it.
