Palm III help

Maybe this isn't the place for this, but I figure that most of you (us) were Palm users before we got our 6035 and this would be the quickest place to get help.

I still have my Palm III and wanted to update it, so I changed the cradle from the 6035's to the Palm III and hit resync.

Now when I turn on my Palm III I get a fatal error when I hit the 'applications' icon.

Here is what it says:

MemoryMgrNew.c,
Line:3970, Invalid handle

Then it has a reset button, which when I hit, just locks up the unit and I have to do a reset.

Any clues???

Jeff,

I believe (note total lack of surity) that this is probably the age old issue of not removing Saved_Preferences.PRC from your backup directory before synching the Palm III.

Saved_Prefs is known to cause problems between Palm devices and the '35.

I'd suggest you make a complete backup copy of your folder in the Palm directory (CalmYOURNAME). Then delete the Saved_Preferences.PRC file from the original directory and then do a synch where Desktop overwrites Palm.

The only other way around this that I know of is to synch the two devices on two different computers.

Let us know if this actually solves the problem.

Unsaved Preferences.pdb too.

Sounds like maybe you were using a 3rd party launcher and deleted it without turning off the "replacer built in launcher" option.

Nope. That didn't do it.

...and I could not find the unsaved preferences file either.

You don't really need to sync to accomplish your goal. Why don't you just delete the address book in your Palm III and beam the newer address book straight from the 6035 to the Palm III?

OK, let's work this through. You do a hard reset and when you press the little house icon with your stylus your unit locks up - is that right?

If no other icon fouls you up then you can press the icon just below the house and delete all non-palm apps. That should, hopefully, resolve your problem. You can then follow the above instructions - copy your c:palm folder to another location and then delete the entire contents of your c:palmyournamebackup folder [where yourname is yourname].

Then do a hotsync and tell us what happens......

If you are trying to sync two different Palm devices with the same user name on the same PC, you are asking for trouble.

You are probably better off hard resetting the Palm, create a new user name for the Palm on the desktop...(Tools>User>New) You can copy the contents of your Calm"6035username" to "Calm"newuser".

As advised earlier, it's definitely a good idea to delete the Saved Pref file from newuserbackup , and while you're at it, anything else that is 6035 specific... Voice tags etc.

Drop the virgin Palm III in the cradle, hit hotsync, and select "newuser".

I know of no painless way to keep all three in sync.

Thanks for all the help, but I am still getting nowhere fast.

I am now attempting to sync on a DIFFERENT computer. The only problem is I still get the original error message.

When the Palm boots up it goes straight to Preferences. At that point you can use the calculator, the find feature and it even shows me my current reminders. I am NOT able to hit the menu button and the only way to get away from the Preferences screen is to hit the Applications button, which results in the error message and a freeze up.

Help....

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm making an assumption here.... you have only tried "soft resets". Have you tried a warm reset? Hold down the UP button, then reset the device. This will reset without loading certain startup code. From there you can hopefully delete an offending app.

If that doesn't work you will have to do a hard reset (holding down the power button, reset and then answer yes) You will lose all data. Then try the steps in my previous post to restore data

If you've already tried a hard reset, and it is not erasing all data, it is Palm Customer Support time.

J Paul

Had to do the hard reset. But that did the trick. Thanks so much for your help.

Honestly CD, I did not know how. I thought hitting the reset in the back WAS a Hard reset.

Thanks for all of your help too.
