The ESN seems to follow the RF board, and some or all of the program data relevant to the carrier seems to reside on the RF board. The MB seems to carry the PALM OS. I hadn't fully tested this, however.
You can try cleaning the RF board with d.i. water and see what happens. That works with a wet palmpilot if you wait for the water to dry.
These come apart by removing the case front, slipping the LCD tabs out slightly on one side, and removing the screws. The LCD connector and the RF board snap off the MB. I prefer to remove the rubber RF port plug before re-assembly (after removing the boards), and then gently replace it when I'm done messing with the phone.
