Have a few questions when traveling to Italy (or Europe if it can be generalized)
1. If I understand, when traveling, you should buy a sim in the country that you're travling - is this correct? How much do they usually cost?
2. What Nav software do you use? Or is it better to just get a month subscription to Tele-Nav (or will it work with the country-specific Sim?)
In regards to #2, I just started using Microsoft MapPoint which exports to PocketStreets, but this seems like a partial solution - providing detail of the cities, but not true-turn by turn navigation.

This really depends on how much use you're planning on. If it's going to be low, roaming may be an OK alternative. If you search the web for "International SIM" or "Italian SIM" you'll find costs.

Does TeleNav even work in Italy? I'd check before counting on it being available.
For Europe, you might want to check out Route 66. They're a European company that's been around a while and has software that covers the area quite well. You install it on your memory card from a DVD, then activate it, so it goes where you want it. I like their software, but didn't like the US POI database much. There's also iGuidance and iGo (both of which I've heard good things about).

Would also like to add that you should notify AT&T about overseas usage. If I recall from my time with AT&T, you had to notify them in order to work in Europe. Also, you can purchase SIM cards for under $50 if I recall correctly. Do not have any info on the NAV portion though. Best of luck.
I went to italy last summer 8/2007. I bought a tim sim a few months before the trip and recharged it a couple times at any local tabac store.
It was not a lot of money and I was able to give my friends and family my italian number before I left,
I used https://www.telestial.com/ and found them to be professional and reasonable.
They (and others) offer a 800 callback number that you can purvhase service from if you plan on making a lot of phone calls out of country.
I was using a N95 at tge time and I bought wayfinder software to use with the n95's gps.. When I went to italy I bought a 1 month subscription to italian maps from wayfinder for a few extra bucks.
I do not know about telnav

The main question, though, is using the Tilt - will it work? It seems that when i go to telestial, they require a GSM 900/1800 phone
The Kaiser family will definitely work internationally - the radios support all of the required frequencies, some just aren't used in the US. But it is a GSM phone.
Now if/when the 700Mhz spectrum becomes a world-wide standard, then you'll need a new phone. But that will be years in the making.
I'll be going to Italy in September also. I got the SIM unlock code from ATT, and I plan on buying a SIM once I arrive (I've heard it's much cheaper that way). Then I'll just phone home and give family my italian number.
For GPS, I plan on using TomTom and allready have the Italy maps loaded on my storage card.
The only thing I"m a little vague about is how data charges will work on a pre-paid italian SIM card.
Does anybody know if the Telestial purchased TIM SIM card supports internet data service the same as if you bought a TIM card in italy? According to some other sites I've found, data service through TIM is 0.006 Euros per KB... They also have larger plans where you can buy bigger chunks of data.
I like the idea of knowing the phone number ahead of time so I can share it with family, but I'm unsure if I can use data with the telestial card, and/or/how I would add a larger data plan to it.
