Remapping the PTT button solution
Over at xda-developers, mbritten posted this solution. don't know if it works, but thought I would share:
Ok this actually can be done in the registry, what you will need to do is stop the PPT service from loading when you boot up, I used SK tools and removed it from the start-up section of that program. Then you need to goto:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
Add a new key called 40C6
then I added a string called Name with the value Button 6
you should now be able to assign a program to PTT through settings/buttons
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
if for whatever reason its not there yet these are all the values I have under key 40C6
(default) "path to your program in quotes"
dword: BtnWnd value=0
dword: Flags value=0
string: Name value=Button 6
string: ResetCmd value "path to your program in quotes"
string: WndCls LEAVE BLANK
if you need to enter all that, go for it, but I would assume it would work after completing the first part of this post
let me know
PS with Voice command it only works to start the program, holding the PTT button to cancel a command doesn't work for me, if anyone figures that out let me know, that would be awesome

Thanks for sharing this... I may give that a try because I don't intend to ever use PTT, and I'd like the button... plus I'm nervous that I'll activate it accidentally.

Disable PTT (Credit to vpoet)
In the registry navigate to the hklm\services\ptt
Back it up and delete it (yes the entire key)
Add a new key for the PTT Button (Credit to mbritten)
Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
Add a new key called 40C6
Add a string called Name with the value Button 6
Add a new key for the PTT Button - Press and Hold
Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
Add a new key called 40C7
Add a string called Name with the value Button 6 (Press & Hold)
you should now be able to assign a program to these two buttons through settings/buttons – It will set the rest of the necessary registry values.

assuming it works like it did on my ppc6700, a hard reset restores the device to factory settings. this would include the registry.
having just gotten my tilt today (to replace the 6700), I can't tell you from experience. however i will be hard resetting soon and will let u know if it somehow sticks.

Hard resets will absolutely wipe out these (and any other) settings. Unless you've installed a ROM that contains the new settings, it's lost.
