Ive been having some power issues and decided that maybe it was time to upgrade batteries, but read a post from someone on Amazon for a battery I was interested in that made me question the value in doing so...so I decided the best thing to do was come here and ask the experts
I still have the factory 1350 mAh battery. On Amazon.com I have found some 1600 that are still thin enough to fit with the existing back, and then extended batteris up to 2800 - 3000 mAh that come with a fitted back. A customer review of the 3000 indicated that he didnt get a huge increase in charge life(2800-3000 range being eseentially greater than twice the 1350 standard, but he didnt note a doubling in charge life) That item listed here
So has anyone got any figures on battery size compared to the gain? I am wondering if there is diminishing returns and a 2800 gives the same basic gain as a 3000, ect.
What about cases for an extended battery? I am more than willing to buy a new case if I can get a decent increase from an extended battery, but I havent had much luck finding one - I'd prefer a metal case if one exists for a Tilt with extended battery.
I haven't researched any of the replacement batteries in any real detail for one simple reason - the 3rd party batteries often underperform to such an extent that I don't care to invest any money in them. I'm skeptical of their claims and suitability.
LiIon or LiPolymer batteries have a charge that's based on their size, so to double the capacity of the battery you have to double the form factor. If the batteries that are out there are smaller than that, then I question the capacity claims, I question whether the shielding is adequate, and whether I should be using one.
The posts I've seen in other forums tend to reinforce those concerns. So I've simply purchased a spare standard battery that I keep with me in my bag or pocket (it's small enough for that) for those times when I might need more juice.
But there are posts at XDA-Developers on various batteries, most of them les than stellar.
I have been using a Seidio 1600mah battery with my Tilt for several months, and it works great.
With the already somewhat thick size of the Tilt, there's no way I'd go for the heft of an oversized extended battery. With Exchange push and 3G, I can get a full day's use out of my Tilt with the Seidio battery. I come up a bit short with the HTC battery.
If I were you, I'd get an extra stock or extended battery and simply carry a spare if necessary. Interestingly, the Seidio battery is a little lighter than the stock battery even though it's higher capacity.

Thank you very much, great info. I took a look on Amazon.com and found the battery you mentioned for $13.90 + $4.99 shipping (that's cheap enough I may not bother surfing around to find someplace else cheaper).
I don't know why I didn't think of just charging up a bunch of batteries, and keeping them in places where it may come up. I really appreciate it.
$13.90? That's got to be a used battery, and I wouldn't recommend buying one of those.
On a standard battery, I'll get 8-12 hours of use depending on what I'm doing. So having the second one in my bag is usually more than enough until I can get someplace where I can charge.
