Does living someplace with high humidity destroy the TyTN II?

I was told in another forum that since I am moving to Panama which has high humidity that my HTC TyTN II will be destroyed and not work at all. If this is true its absolutely horrible for me since I just paid over $500 for this device a few days ago.

Any thoughts or comments on this?

What do you consider high humidity? The Midwest US has pretty high humidity during the summer, for example, and I haven't heard any complaints about the life of any devices, let alone the TyTN II.

Humidity can make life miserable for electronics, but usually it's because the humidity turns into rain that soaks the hell out of something and blows the components to shreds.

I wouldn't sweat it, myself. But if you're concerned about it, there are third party insurance firms that you could get a contract with. Google 'Smartphone Insurance' and see what you get.

Don't Worry

I've had a TyTN II in Costa Rica (nearly as wet as Panama) since last November. I use it outside every day. So far, I see no issue with humidity. I saw the message about the phone lasting only 4 days (is that possible????). I'd say it was a defective phone.

I've had a PDA in Costa Rica for the past 3+ years, an iPAQ 4705. It still works fine. These units are made for outside use.

Now, on the other hand, I'm on my 3rd laptop! My first 2 lasted about one year each. My current Dell is just 2 years old, but going strong at this point.

Gibraltar destroying my phone

My TyTN II was less than 6 months old when it stopped working because of humidity damage.

I have returned this device to HTC UK to be fixed under the standard 2 year warranty. I posted this device from Gibraltar as great personal cost - as directed by the person I spoke to on the phone.

First of all I had to call them, 2 weeks later, as they promised the device had been fixed and was being returned to a UK address I had giving them (in UK for a couple of days). I was told after a couple of 'round the houses' phone calls that the device was in fact NOT being sent as previously promised because of liquid damage.

You can imagine my surprise and disappointment when my new phone, that I had paid over £400 for was not going to be fixed, furthermore they were now starting to get on to me about PAYING to return a broken phone !!

Mike Barton from HTC Europe has told me that "The engineers statement indicates liquid has entered the device, and this means the device is beyond economical repair.
The quotation you have been sent is to return the device to Gibraltar unrepaired should you wish to have the device returned
."

Should anyone wish to contact HTC for any reason relating to humidity damage then contact

HTC Europe Co., Ltd.

Hatfield Road, Slough
SL1 1QE, United Kingdom

and send a copy to:

mastersupport@htc.com and reference your letter

Picture is clearly liquid damage, will ring to discuss.

They say that humidity is not included in their "OOW" warranty of their devices.

They are claiming that this device has "liquid damage" which is clearly show by the photos I received from their engineers.

I am very disappointed with the level of service and have got and the endless delays received from them in this matter.

Not all HTC TyTN II suffer from this problem, possibly caused by a defective seal from the factory which they are apparently unwilling to consider!

At the rate any resolution would lightly come AFTER the 2 year warranty has expired. NOTE this phone has been in dispute almost as long as I owned it

I live in Hawaii with my tilt, I have yet to have any problems. Granted, I've only had it for four months or so. So far so good.

ATT tilt is affected by humidity!

I am on my second tilt. This one acts the same as the first when exposed to high humidity (east coast US) days. That is it quits. It won't recieve calls, it won't register call history, the backlight won't work, sometimes it won;t shut down. I dry it in a zip lock with dessicant packets for a day or so and all is well. I considered sending this one back as well, but the first one had the same issues. I still may, but it is a slight hassle installing the TP software all over again.
