Preparing HTC TyTN II for international use, skype and video conferencing
I dropped my iPhone in the swimming pool today and could not decide to wait for the 3g iPhone or not. Anyway I just ordered a unlocked TyTN II.
I am going to Panama in Central America for a few months and need to use my new TyTN while I am there. I know I can get a sim card for the local network and use the phone fine while there but I have some questions about skype and internet calling.
I have read in multiple places that the new Windows Mobile 6.1 does not work with SKYPE? Is this true? If so anyway to work around the issue?
If not should I downgrade my OS right away when I get the TyTN II?
Does the front camera work for video calling with SKYPE? If not what does it work with?
Does the GPS work no matter what country I am in?
Anything else I should do to my phone right away to prpare it for lots of international skype usage.
Thanks
CC

The stock ROM does not support it, but a number of cooked ROMs do. Check out the ROMs at XDA-dev for details.

Unless you can find a WM5 ROM for the phone, you'll have difficulty doing this. I'm unaware of one.

I don't know if it will work or not.

There are a number of carriers that support video calling. The front camera will work with their service currently, but any app that could detect it could use it.

Yes, but you'll obviously need an app and maps for the country you're in.
Skype has been demonstrated not to work on stock WM 6/6.1 phones. But at xda-dev, there's a number of ROMs that fix that problem with changes to WM dlls.

Skype released a version with support for WM 6.1 in early August. It works fine on my Tilt with official AT&T WM 6.1 but YMMV.
