Safe Mode, or boot with extensions off

OK...so today for no reason what-so-ever, my 8500 will no longer respond to any screen or button use.
Earlier today, I read some email, checked the weather and downloaded some RSS. Soon after that, the 8500 complained about low battery (about 20%) so I plugged it in all morning. Come lunch, the battery hadn't charged at all, so I hit the reset button... That usually clears things up and the charger can charge...which it did.
Now it will no longer respond to any of the screen taps, buttons or keyboard. I have an orange light blinking and a blue light blinking at the top...I know that the blue light is bluetooth, but the orange light indicates charging, right? That light should be green, right?
So, I suspect that there is some application that is starting up and hanging...

how can I boot the device in a kinda "safe mode" so that I can troubleshoot what application is causing problems?

As an asside, when I hit the reset button and wait for the initial menu to come up, I can scroll and hit buttons while it's completing it boot (program loads) but then it locks up?

Any hints?

Thanks.

The only way you can boot in safe mode is if you have a safe mode program installed. There are several third part programs that can provide this, but that is probably more for future than this issue.

Is the phone totally locked up after you reset or does it just no respond to dpad or the stylus? If it is not totally locked, can you connect via Active Sync? At least then you could get to the Windows folder and see if you have anything you can delete from startup. If you are totally locked, the only thing I can think of to try, other than a hard reset is to boot without the SD card in place in case that is somehow the issue.

OK...the hint to the answer is in this message...
Turns out that I have a few applications that save data to the SD card. Somehow, I don't reallly know how, but the SD card got corrupted. I removed the SD card, rebooted the phone and it was fine. I inserted the SD card and could browse it no problems...the issue only occured when I booted with the SD card installed. I copied the contents of the card to my computer, then formatted the card and copied the contents back to the card. Then reinserted it back in the phone. Now everything works without a hitch...
Thanks for the help.
