WMP hasn't worked well since the FIRST Cingular 8525 ROM

For QUITE some time, I could use my 2GB A-Data MicroSD card in the 8525 with no issue. But shortly after going to the newer official rom for the phone that came out in April, my music files disappeared from WMP. I could still find them going to "Open File" and pointing to a directory, but obviously that isn't as convienant.

Frustrated, I decided to download and install one of the homecooked roms, specifically Black 3.0.1. That introduced a few new problems, such as some of the keyboard symbols being on the wrong keys, and the BT had some issues streaming music to my car. These must have been problems found by others, as "patch" cabs were available and once I went back to the previous BT driver, and patched then softbooted my cell... everything seemed great.

UNTIL yesterday, when WMP started acting up again.

My specifics are as follows. I've read this is a common issue, that can be fixed by formatting the memory card on a PC to FAT32. Not only did I do that, but when I went to put music back on the memory card... I did it using a memory card device and windows explorer (drag and drop, not conversion.) NOT WMP, and not even Windows Explorer through Activesync which might have converted the file in some way. All my music is in WMP's .vbr format, and works fine on the PC, used to work fine on the 8525, and still works on my 6700.

So what is the problem? Some say there are 3 files that corrupt, on the 8525. I've tried deleting these from my PC, and it's true WMP will readd the files correctly after that. But it seems as though after one or two uses, the corruption returns and I can't delete these "hidden" files while I'm away from a PC.

Don't suppose anyone here has any better answers? I find the xda-developers site, and the wiki on the HTC-Hermes to be GREAT resources... but they provide no better solution on this. Any help would sure be appreciated, as at this stage... I'm quite confused.

i don't have a solution for you since I only use WMP to stream Sirius, but I can confirm that both TCPMP and Coreplayer 1.1 work great on my 8525.

BTW, the keyboard issue is actually a simple thing - the TyTN is available all over the world, so they map the keys to different symbols depending on location. I keep the keyboard fix cab file on my storage card so that I can apply the tweak each time I reflash (which is quite often LOL). I currently use HTCustom (a tweaking app) which has it built in.

If the problem you are experiencing is that your library is disappearing (library shows no storage card option), this is because the MS XML data storage that represents the playlists becomes corrupt. This is a known bug and I am waiting to see if the problem reappears in WM6 (Black Majik) but I would guess that it will since we are still using WMP10. Fingers crossed anyway...

To fix this in WMP, you will find a hidden folder called MSMETADATA on your storage card under the root directory. Simply delete this and rebuild your library. (Show the hidden folder with the options/show hidden under File Explorer.) I have done this many times and it fixes the symptom, but not the problem.

Alternatively, I have used both PocketMusic and TCMP and neither suffer from the bug.

JMG - You ROCK!!!

I've had several WM phones, and never noticed the "Show All Files" option in File Explorer. So everytime I've wanted to fix my music problem, I've had to connect to a PC. Now I can at LEAST do it on the go!!!

Thank god for PdaPhoneHome!!!

Thanks...being an ex-Softie, it pisses me off that this is such a well known issue and continues to bite us all in the a$$.

BTW, I have not experienced this issue with WM6...fingers crossed, perhaps it will not be a regular recurrance with the updated OS.

Well, after a couple weeks with the 3.0.1 Black ROM, I switched to a different one. Forget which one I chose off the xda site, but it has WMP on the Today screen and works GREAT! I had to readd voice dial seperately AGAIN, but now I can back up my voice dial setup!!!

A quick Google search for "windows mobile 6 8525" yields the results you're looking for. Search is your friend
