What happened to my speed?

I recently bought a 8525 from cingular... I got a killer deal since I am a student It was free with a 2 year contract... So anyway I got the phone and the internet was fast ALWAYS over 800Kbit/s mostly in he high 900's some low 1000's..... Anyway I recently noticed that it is always around 400-500 now and almost never reachses 900-1000 anymore... What the hell happened? Also I notice that my browser always gets stuck on Locating and I have to open and close it a few times to finally get it to work. Does cingular jack up the speed for the firts couple weeks to get new customers to stay then cap them off or what? I am using wap.cingular and tried isp.cingular but PIE will not open a page. I also noticed that when tethered my ip is a verizon ip and when using Opera Mobile it is also a verizon IP but once I am back on PIE it is a mycingular.net ip... Weird!

Which data package do you have? My isp.cingular is only accessible on PDA Connect or higher.

Are you using the default DNS servers? Cingular's DNS servers are notoriously slow, which causing the "locating" delay you refer to.

Yes I am using everything setup the way Cingular/ATT set it up. Any suggestions to speed things up would be GREAT!

My data plan is PDA Connect Unlim $39.99 a month.

Follow the instructions HERE to change your DNS servers and see if that helps.

The one problem was fixed... now only the speed is an issue. I don't understand why my speeds were outstanding when I first got the phone and are rather poor now... Hell when it was tethered I was getting 1,300Kbit a second now I get 300-400....

Are you getting similar results everywhere? I've noticed my speeds will fluctuate depending on where I'm located (which is a result of the number of users on that tower).

The speeds you're seeing are consistent with UMTS - you haven't run any tweak programs and inadvertently turned off HSDPA have you?

I don't think so.... Basically everywhere I used to get 900+K I am now getting 300-400K My status says 3G. I have noticed it bounce from E to G to 3G and it never used to do that. It is usually on 3G though.

You could back up everything and try a hard reset to see if it fixes it. Other than that, I'm not sure. You could also try a warranty return.

I did a storage reset my speed picked up to 600k but I still never get 900 like I used to.... Also I get very low 200-300 speeds right after a fast one.... It seems very unstable with 600-700 one test and 200 the next....

I noticed my speeds read slightly slower on isp.cingular - however, I think it's just because the wap.cingular proxy doesn't give an accurate reading.

600+ is HSPDA speed. As long as the device is responsive, I wouldn't worry about it.

Now that I think about it.... When I first got the phone I would do a speed test and it would sit at 8K then shoot across and Mspeed would say I was getting 900+K Now PIE seems to track the progress better and show the whole transfer going up more and more.... My question is was I really getting slower speeds but tricking the test site because my phone would hang at 8k for the whole test then just shoot up to complete. I want to believe that is true but my tether speeds were very good around 1200-1300K on a speed test now they are around 300K. My WIFI speed is still 1500K so the only thing that has changed is my 3G speeds. Also when it is connecting to 3G it says GPRS, 3G.... Shouldn't it be HSPDA? I'm trying to figureout where my 900-1000K speeds went. LOL

3G
1) 592Kbit/sec .39 lat 14.165s dltime 1MB file
2) 694Kbit/sec .26 lat 12.048s dltime 1MB file
3) 369Kbit/sec .351 lat 22.5s dltime 1MB file

WIFI 24MB/S Cable Connection
1) 1311Kbit/sec .163 lat 6.409s dltime 1MB file
2) 1439Kbit/sec .179 lat 5.87s dltime 1MB File
3) 1338Kbit/sec .15 lat 6.268s dltime 1MB file

Well I spoke to an Advanced Tech with Cingular and he said that he doesn't even know how I was getting those 900-1000Kbit speeds but what I am getting now is basically average and that I should just enjoy what I have since there are others that are much slower....

update.... I am back to normal... the tech did tell Me he wanted me to take my battery out and he would do something.... maybe it actually worked?

Mobile speed test
1052 kbit/sec
0.378s latency
4.901s d/l time.again.

Mobile speed test
842 kbit/sec
0.357s latency
6.041s d/l time.again.

Mobile speed test
726 kbit/sec
0.341s latency
6.951s d/l time.again.

Out of curiosity have you cleared the cache on the PIE lately?

Also do you ever use your Wireless Ethernet to connect to the internet? I found that somehow would really screw things up when I was testing speeds - it would often lead to the hanging at "locationg" like you mentioned.
