Touch Tips and Tricks Thread

Seems like its time for a “tips and tricks” thread. I have been saving and editing these posts so far for a start. I have not necessarily tried each and every one of these, but they all come from threads in this forum. In most (hopefully all) cases I have provided credit to the original poster, but I am bound to have gotten that wrong now and then, so my apologies in advance.

For noobs, you will need a registry editor to perform many of the tricks that follow. If you don’t have one, you can get a free one here, or you can buy one here—there are plenty of other ones out there; everybody has their favorite and will probably provide links to those as well in the following posts. Here is a link to HobbesIsReal's incredibly informative and thorough article on how to edit your registry--if you have any questions he has answered them--check it out.

All of the reg edits, tweaks and hacks posted here have their own corresponding thread, so if you have any questions about implementing a particular hack, edit or tweak, search for the thread on point; DON’T post your question here. In most cases (hopefully all) I have tried to provide a link to the thread in question. Try to use this thread just for posting tips and tricks and keep the commentary to the appropriate thread.

Some of these tips and tricks may cease to work with future updates, or may just not work right now. If you post or PM me with problems I will try and edit out known bad tips from this initial post—the Mod(s) (maybe someday 8notime will get some help) are sure to monitor the traffic as well and fix future problems.

Remember—any changes or tweaks you make could cause problems down the road--anywhere from vague stability issues to bricking your phone. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Shorten time/ number of rings to answer

Credit to Elkay

Thread

Here is a tip from the 6700 forum that works on the Touch (credit to Elkay in the 6700 forum). You may have noticed that when someone calls you it may take several rings on their end before the Touch begins to ring. The reason for this delay is the “slot cycle index,” or how often your Touch polls the towers for an incoming call. Default appears to be about 5 seconds—way to long. Of course, as always, there is a compromise to be made—the more often it polls the tower, the more power it uses. Anyway here is the hack:

To do this, you will need your MSL number, which only Sprint (or your provider) can provide you.

1) Open up the phone app and dial ##778# (PST).

2) You will be asked to enter your MSL. Enter it, and you will be brought into the provisioning of your phone.

3) From the top left, select Modem Settings. On this page, your Slot Cycle Index (SCI) is how often your phone polls the tower for incoming calls, etc. This value is 1.28 seconds multiplied by 2 (i.e 0=1.28 secs, 1=2.56secs) with 0 fastest, 7 slowest. The default is 2, but lowering it to 1 hasn't noticeably affected my battery life, and roughly 2.5 second (SCI 1) response time is far more reasonable than roughly 5 seconds (SCI 2).

Force EV-DO/1X, quicker ring response

Same thread

Here is another tip from the same 6700 post by Elkay.

1) Follow steps 1 through 3 in the Shorten time/ number of rings to answer tip:

Also on this page is your preferred operation mode. The Default is Automatic, which is the best available mode (EV that will roll back to 1X when EV is unavailable). There are times when you might be in a fringe area and your mode may cycle frequently and this can seriously drain your battery. Setting this to HDR will force EV-DO only if you demand an EV-DO connection. Changing this setting to CDMA Only will force the phone to ignore an EV-DO tower and maintain only a 1xRTT connection.

Edit the quick launch buttons on the main screen (the row with the phone, headphone, pictures, search, Sprint TV buttons)

Thread

There are 2 files in \windows that you need to edit.

Check out the thread below, post #4 for details on how to do this:

Link

I (8notime) ran into the same issue. This is how I resolved it:

1.) I removed the read only attribute from \windows\ql_skin_p & from \windows\ql_skin_l (one is for portrait, the other for landscape).

2.) I edited the path in these for WLS to reflect the actual patch for LiveSearch.exe. There are 1 too many Live Search's in the path name. Also the landscape file had a space in LiveSearch.exe that didn't belong there.

3.) I went into settings, today, items, and then clicked ok, without changing anything.

The screen refreshed & now the button works.

To customize the HTC Home screen (including add a city to HTC weather).

Yo man, just install this file. It is a program that allows you to customize your HTC home screen. Nothing will change if you don't want, but it gives you the option to makes your icons color, change your clock, and a bunch of other really cool stuff. PLUS, you can make your weather thing point to ANY city. I live in a small city in Florida, and it worked PERFECTLY for mine. It is a really cool program.

1.) Just go to your start menu/setting/today.

2.) go to the items tab

3.) uncheck the htc home(this is just while installing this program)

4.) go to that link and install the file

5.) go back to settings and turn HTC Home back on for the today screen

6.) customize your today screen with this new program

7.) there is a weather tab under the setting for this program and you just add a custom city. And you are DONE!

Fix for IE Homepage from cube.

Thread

Credit to Rijc99

If you launch PIE from the cube, it always goes to the Sprint webpage.

To fix this, you have to go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/HTC/Biotouch/APLauncher
change the path to \Windows\pie.lnk

Live Search Today Shortcut Fix Procedure.

Thread

Credit to tbhausen and 8notime

First check this post by Snotime.

Then here is a more detailed version by tbhausen:

More explanation of how I got this to work:

1.) Be sure PC Win Explorer is set to show hidden files on all folders

2.) Download and install SOTI Pocket Controller Pro (PCP)

3.) Connect phone with USB cable

4.) Start PCP and connect to phone

5.) On your PC, start file manager in PCP

6.) Browse to windows directory on phone

7.) Right-click on both xml files referenced earlier in this thread, uncheck "read only" attribute, press "apply" and "close" (or "done" or whatever...)

8.) Copy 8notime's edited pair of xml files into windows directory on phone (overwrite warning will be displayed)

9.) Close PCP file manager and disconnect phone from PCP using pull-down menu

10.) Disconnect phone from USB cable

11.) Soft reset phone

12.) Navigate to start, settings, today, items, OK

13.) Soft reset phone again

14.) Test (this WILL work if I haven't left anything out)

Note: I (tbhausen) couldn't get Total Commander to change the "read only" attribute, either.

Switching Messaging Accounts by just swiping left or right on the screen

Thread

Did everyone know that this existed? I was shocked when I accidentally swiped the screen left or right on the messaging screen? It's nice (switches between messaging accounts).

Additional credit to i4edge:

Yes you can also use the D pad and press to the right or left.

Additional credit to storino03:

You can do it within emails and text messages too.

How to increase the volume of MS voice command

Thread

Credit to Black88mx6 and PocketPC Tweaks author Majed Aly

MS Voice Command volume during announcing a call is very low:

In order to increase the volume , navigate to HKCU\Control Pannel\SoundCategories\VoiceCommand1

Then change the value of AttenuationCategory from 4 to 1

Sound of the voice command will be even higher than the ringing tone.
You can also change the value of InitVol to 40.

Change digital clock to analog

Thread

Credit to 8notime

By default, it's set to digital. To change it to analog you need to edit the following registry value:

HKLU/Software/Microsoft/Shell

(to change to analog)

Change AnalogClock from a 0 to a 1

(to change to digital)

Change AnalogClock from a 1 to a 0

then do a soft reset.

Further Credit to amesur

I also figured out that if you hold down on the analog or digital clock on the top right it gives you a choice of Analog or Digital.

Here's another one that I just tried and it still works.

Vision Duration + Disconnect Button

The Vision duration registry edit from the 6600 and the 6700 still works on the Touch. This edit allows you to see the duration of your Vision connection along with a button to disconnect it. You see it in the bubble that is displayed when you tap the Vision icon.

Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click ControlPanel
Click Phone
[at this point, the top grey status bar should read \HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone']
Click the bottom menu
Click New DWORD Value
Name = flags2
Click Hex
DWORD Data = 10
Click Ok
Soft reset device and tap on the vision icon (when on line) and it will show the disconnect button and connection time.

The Battery Hack:

Here are two different ways to do the battery hack and a link to the thread where you can find a discussion of it.

Credit to mtnmedic (although he disavows it), and cody for the .cab.

Thread.

The hack consists of several registry edits and are as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AsyncMac1\Parms]
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Irsir1\Parms]
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\PPTP1\Parms]
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\L2TP1\Parms]
Default value type and value are
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:1
Change to
“DisablePowerManagement”=dword:0

Or you can just use the .cab cody kindly put together to make these edits as found in the following post:

Post.

The battery hack modifies the power management settings where indicated and ppl report increased battery performance using the hack(s).

Stop ActiveSync from running after each time change

Yes, every time, time changes activesync runs which is why you always see it running. I think this might cause some of the wierd glitches we see now and then.

Here is how to disable this "feature".

xda-developers - View Single Post - Disable Activesync Autostart?

Note: I didn't go into the registry at all and used MemMaid 2.0 to just kill that Notification (on my device it was the 2nd out of 3 Repllog.exe entries in the Notification Table).

Here's a new one altogether--good find Bad Ash.

Registry Edit To Make Finger Scrolling A LOT Better

Credit to Bad Ash and those guys at PPC Geeks.

Thread

HKLM/Software/OEM/TFLOSettings

Change DWord value for FingerPressure to 9000

This hack is reported to improve both the sensitivity of finger scrolling and its smoothness/choppiness. It is also reported to improve the sensitivity of other touch screen functions.

Exclamation Fix Touch to work with Tomtom DUN wireless

if anyone is interested I went to:

TOMTOM GO and WM6 (DUN) - Page 3 - xda-developers

I installed this first, then soft reset. The I went to:

TOMTOM GO and WM6 (DUN) - xda-developers

and installed the Modenlink.zip files from post 3 10, in the Touch windows folder. Then I repaired with my Tomtom Go 920. Then used these settings to set up the connection:

A) confirm you have a data plan with Sprintpcs
B) pair the TomTom with your phone bluetooth wise
C) follow the following

1. Phone selection - other
2. Carrier selection - other
3. Country - UNITED STATES
4. Access point - blank
5. username - blank
6. password - blank
7. number to dial - #777 (delete what this window shows on the tomtom and put the #777 in)
7.use DHCP auto
8. DNS auto
9. No scripts - left blank for logon script

An hey it worked. You have to have the tomtom plus services from tomtom, there is a fee, but you can try it free for a month from tomtom.com

I hope this helps people who may have been trying!!!

Here's a useful little ditty Bootheresa found over at PPCGEEKS originally posted by biggggant. It lets you drag the keyboard around the screen.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/controlpanel/sip
go to dragstyle change the value from 0 to 1
Wait a 30 seconds soft reset.
You will have a drag bar at the top of all your keyboards. Touch and drag your KB where ever you like on the screen. I haven't seen this hack on here. BOO

Here is the thread.
