>>>WM6.1 installation guide<<< FOR SPRINT USERS ONLY
8notime and I spent a few hours last night going back and forth via AIM testing this all out and WM6.1 runs perfect on our devices. If you want to install WM 6.1 follow the directions below:

There was one thing that took me over an hour to figure out. My laptops hard drive is partitioned. The ImCoKeMaN unlocker posted over at PPC geeks will not work on a partitioned drive. <EDIT: I was able to use the unlocker with Vista and a partitioned drive. Why 8 could not is beyond to me, so bear that in mind if you have the same issue he did.>
With that in mind, here are the steps I took:
*EDIT: PLEASE BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY IN THIS POST AS WELL AS IN THE LINKS POSTED.
1.) Downloaded the file named Vogue_unlocker.exe found here.
username = ppcgeeks
password = ezupload
2.) Renamed the file in post #1 to Vouge_unlocker.zip
3.) Extract the contents of the file in post #2 to a new folder on my desktop
4.) Downloaded the file from Megaupload, that's referenced in this thread. into the folder on my desktop. This rar file should be extracted into the same folder you created in the step above.
5.) Hard reset my Touch
6.) Connected Touch to computer & said cancel when ActiveSync prompted to setup a partnership
7.) Ran the program called Vogue_unlocker.bat
8.) Followed the prompts on the screen
9.) When it was all said and done, I made the reg change stated in this thread
We discovered the only downside to doing this was a few key apps are missing. I have put them together in zip files attached. Cab files for the IM app, Sprint TV, and Live Search. Here's a link to download Windows Live
*On Demand is also missing from the rom but simply just go to file explorer\windows (make sure in the options "show all files is checked") and look for ondemand6900 file and just click it and it will install.
In case anyone needs a registry editing app here you go. You will need one to make the required reg edit once the installation is complete. (listed in one of the links above)
Hmm...so this flashes the factory rom, meaning...if you do a hard reset it won't go back to factory default anymore?
How do you like it so far, is it significantly different from WM 6, and if so, is it different in a better way?
I don't think I am brave enough to try this...that's for sure. You should make a little video and put it on YouTube so we can see what we're missing out on if we don't do this ourselves. I mean, I think I would try it, but only if I know that I can make another hard reset and get back to what came on the phone.

Does the TouchFlo and all that still work?
You are correct regarding if you do a hard reset it will not go back to te factory default. You can always put the Sprint Factory Rom back on. I can post a link to that if you'd like. I have it as well in case I didnt like 6.1 I was going to flash it back. Like it a lot. Seems a bit more responsive, threaded sms is really nice. Here are some links with pictures.

There is absolutely NO REASON to do this unless you want threaded SMS. If you do want it, then it is VERY MUCH worth the effort!
Like Bad Ash said, there aren't any emoticons, which sucks. Also I've noticed that if you have a conversation open, and a new message comes in from that same person, the audible notification does not sound.
Hmm.... yeah I really don't care about the threaded sms, my friends and I have the attention span of 3 year olds, so texting is usually short and done with fairly quickly. I guess I will stick with what I have. Hopefully Sprint will do a software update so all that extra work isn't needed.
Lets see what the chances are that we will get our Touch with GPS and RevA and 6.1 by the end of the quarter without having to hack it ourselves!
Anyone notice how you can set a sound notification for new text messages in 6.1? It makes a system beep. Another annoying thing is that a new text popup window comes up all the time and you can't hide it.

You can control all of this in Sounds & Notifications under system settings. I'm using Alarm 4 for new message notifications. There's also disable the "display message on screen" option to get rid of the other problem.
I am going to try this but need to backup my existing rom (if that is possible) as I am running a Telus branded touch and there has not been an official image released. Can the existing rom be backed up in this process? Thanks!

The procedure above only applies to the Sprint branded Touch. Do not try this on any other device. I would suggest looking over at PPC Geeks for a Telus ROM.

I'll do that but since the Telus Touch is identical to the Sprint Touch it should be the same. Main issues is whether or not the romupdate utility can backup an existing ROM. Thanks in advance!
