When I got the Mogul if I did .01kb of tethering they knew about it until I put the registry hack in. I don't do much tethering but I do a lot of browsing on the phone. Since then I've had no problems.

Thumbs down

I know I'm going to get majorly flamed here, but I just don't get what is wrong with Sprint doing this? You are paying for unlimited internet on your device, not on your computer. Sprint does have a separate plan that lets you use your computer. They also have connection cards which is what I have for my laptop.

While I'm sure Sprint of course makes a profit from our device specific EVDO useage, at the same time there is a point where they lose money from people tethering and not paying for it. I'm sure tethering to a laptop uses a TON more data than simply using your WM6 device. Hell at this point I'm just happy there is no extra charge for unlimited EVDO on a WM6 device over a regular cell phone.

I'm just having trouble seeing why there should be any complaint that Sprint is just enforcing what you agreed to purchase.

I've been tethering for the past 2 years using PDAnet with no extra charges. But then again I don't tether 24/7.

Geez hey we are on the same side here.

I believe you misunderstood what I was saying. I am neither condoning it or condemning people using it for tethering or the legalities of it. I was merely stating a business case. As someone in the legal field you know you set a precedent by your actions. So if sprint knows that people are tethering and they they don't have a PAM plan and they fail to enforce it what is Sprint saying? It is like having speed limit signs and police that have never given speeding tickets. That is fine they can decided to enforce anytime by automatically adding PAM to peoples account that tether. Some will get mad and ask for it to be taken off and if they continued to tether Sprint would be completely right in charging them outrageously high fees. It would be my preference to have sprint just include tethering as part of the normal plan with some reasonable cap. If they need to start busting people for tethering for that to happen then do it, but don't say you can't do it and then look the other way. It's not fair to those of us who would like to tether but don't out of respect for our contracts.

people know the risks when they go around the system. they should also be adult enough and responsible enough to accept eh consequences if they get caught.

and no one will get sacked with a big bill- sprint will 99% of the time simply backrate you for a PAM plan for that month. they just do that to send a message they know what youre doing.

To the people constantly tethering- since you CHOOSE to effect MY service/ evdo speeds and network congestion, I DO pay for i hope you get caught. Just like if you CHOOSE to speed risking my life or my vehicle getting wrecked i hope you get caught. Or if you CHOOSE to drive drink and risk my life or my vehicle crashing i hope you get caught. I know those are 2 different levels of impact, but the concept remains the same.

Its all about choices and consequences. I feel no sadness for people who willingly violate any rules and get caught- i work hard for what i have and ill be damned if bad choices by others are going to bring me down.

(and no i don't work for sprint or really like sprint as a carrier per say, but i do work in the legal field and in law school and believe in justice and being honest)

Freedoms

I think if I pay for a data connection its mine to do with as I wish. I pay for high speed access at home and they dont tell me I can't shoot the signal to my laptop. I pay for phone service, they dont tell me what phone I have to use to make calls. I pay for water at my house how are they going to tell me I can only use it to wash my car and not a friends? That's my water and my data, I paid for it. This is crazy to me. Call it what you like but I pay for internet access on my phone and I am free to do, share, trade, move any files I want from my phone to another device or home computer, for sprint to say you can't share your access but everything else with your other devices is what a NYC brotha would call "Game" $$$$$ BS!!! Wake up America, Ma Bell is knocking on your door again!

That'd be true, except you sign a contract with the carrier. In that contract, you agree to live by certain rules. So technically, you agree not to do with it as you wish. If you signed an employment contract that says you won't go to work for a competing company for two years after you leave your present job, it's the same thing - you accept a limitation on your actions as condition of the contract. That may suck, but it is legal and they don't hide the limitations from you.

Personally, I tether in violation of contract when I want to. If my carrier catches me, I'll cope with the consequences. If they don't, I got to use it as I wish. That's about the best you can do.

The FCC is starting to look at data contracts pretty closely, particularly since AT&T has come right out and said they attempt to block VoIP applications since they hurt the carrier's revenue for voice contracts. It's possible that the FCC will step in on the issue, though that's unclear.

With all the new bigger screen phones and mobil applications coming out how much do you really need to tether anyway?

I thought the point in being mobile with the internet was the Mobile part?

Well ... it MIGHT be legal. The fact of the matter is that TOS's have never been tested as being enforceable in a court of law. And it remains in the best interest of the carriers to not have it tested. They have more to lose than to gain.

That being said, the main reason I jumped ship at VZW was their draconian policies regarding this very issue. That plus the fact that Sprint's service was just better and cheaper where I live.

My Sprint Data usage since getting my Pre is:
Sprint Data - 08/31 to current 201605

And that's without using any Sprint TV and very limited streaming music, and connected to WiFi whenever I'm at home; so the Pre is no slouch on data usage all by itself!

Do you guys realize this thread was started in Jan of 2008? Has anyone been charged these fees by Sprint since then? If so, please let us know.

If not, then I think this is put to rest.

I have a Motorola Q9C and it isn't working anymore. I'm getting a Code 67 which is a user/password registration problem. I called Sprint tech support who re-provisioned the phone but that didn't solve it. I got a refurbished Q9C yesterday, same problem. I can surf the internet and use google maps data but I can't tether. Anyone else having this problem? This just started about a week ago so I started looking for threads.
