Hi everyone question about GPS for sprint touch pro
I just upgrade to the touch pro from Mogul. I also have the sprint SERO plan. The problem is I only use the sprint gps programe a couple first day after that sprint want me to pay for the gps. Is there any way that I can have another GPS program to use instead of Sprint, so I don't have to pay for it? If yes, what program should I use? Thank you very much for reading and aswering my question guys.
there are a couple programs out there. google maps and windows live are two good programs that use the built in GPS to give you directions, etc. the windows live one allows you to speak into the device and it will interpret..
except neither of those is a GPS program, they are directions/maps.
For example what about those Tom tom cabs I saw posted? will that work if he is not subscribed to gps?
i dont follow.. what do you mean GPS program? pardon my ignorance please..
the programs i posted take advantage of the gps in the phone and give you turn by turn directions, atm locations, gas,, restaurants, etc etc.. you dont need tom tom files or any other files to use those programs...
Google Maps and Windows Live do the same type of thing as Garmin or Tom Tom - they just do it without installing something onto the phone itself and paying for the maps. All of them will use location data to place you on a map, and all of them can give you directions to somewhere.
Google/Live advantages - no cost for the apps, maps that get updated without a cost to you and (theoretically) a continuously updated POI database.
Garmin/TomTom advantages - works whether there's a cellular network around or not, often easier to customize to behave the way you want, speaks turn-by-turn directions (usually without the street names on the PDA, but varies by app).
Personally, I own Garmin Mobile XT and love it. At $99, it's a steal, it's always with me, and it works really well. I'd originally thought I'd upgrade it every 3 years or so, but then it started pulling POI data from Google on-line and I might not even do that. That said, I still do hit Google Maps for things, just not directions.
Marctronixx - I am probably not as knowledgeable as you are have used mailny the sprint gps app and windows live a bit. so do google maps and windows live update your location as you are driving? and update the directions if you take a different street?
Anyway the other question was does Sprint have a way to turn of the gps in your phone if you don't pay for the gps feature or do they just turn off the turn by turn app?
you uhave to login to the sprint app to access it. thats how they know when your using the app. the gps is taken from the actual gps sats in the sky AND terrestial callular towers. if you dont have the sprint navi then you cant use the app.
you CAN still use the GPS for other programs and you can turn it off yourself..

Early versions didn't follow you unless you manually told it to zoom to your location (neither Google or MS wanted it to be viewed as a guidance app for liability reasons). I don't know if they changed that in the newer versions.

Not one that would "stick" once someone breaks it, no. Verizon is famous for shipping phones with GPS locked to the VZW Navigator app, but it always gets hacked to open it up. And since they've no way of forcing a policy to a WM phone (you could do that with ActiveSync OTA, I bet), once it's open, it's open.
And their app is either subscription or pay-per-use, so they don't want to turn their app off.
I use Copilot and have for years. Love the program. As long as I didn't use Sprint's GPS software I was able to use the GPS without paying for it. A few weeks ago the antenna stopped working. Now I just use my external antenna.
I use Bing (formerly Live Search) and it does all I need. In fact, it does something that moany others do not do - voice recognition. I say an address and it routes me there - very nice. It is a little harder to use than a standalone unit, but I expect a small price for not having to buy and lug another gadget.
It does do turn-by-turn.
It does follow your location and
it does auto-reroute.
Literally, the only upside left to a natively stored app is the lack of connectivity that they can have and still function.
PS - the GPS is standalone as well as an aGPS - this means it can function with or without a data connection and does NOT cost anything to use. What the carriers charge for is the application itself.
