Newbie Question on upgrading the ROM

OK, folks I have had my TP for about 3 weeks now, and would really like to use the GPS. So I have downloaded the rom from Here, but I have a few basic questions. Hopefully I won't get flamed to much for such a question but here goes.

1. Just how hard is it to flash the ROM?
2. How long does it take?
3. And how likely am I to brick the thing?

I have heard a lot of horror stories about people bricking their phones while trying to update the ROM, and I really don't want to do that. My wife would shoot me if I did.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I am not exactly a pro and I didn't brick it. However, I haven't been able to get the GPS to work yet. All I know is that once you sync your phone and start the process....DON'T touch your phone unless it asks you to do something. If the process stops mid-stream, you could brick it.

Flashing ROMs isn't hard. Just follow the instructions closely.

Usually, a flash will take 5-10 minutes depending on the device and the ROM.

You're very unlikely to brick your phone doing a flash as long as the ROM is for your device (like, don't use a CDMA ROM on a GSM phone) and do the above.

Upgrading the ROM is cake. I tell anyone who does this to go to the Communications window and turn the Phone to OFF. This will prevent any incoming calls or texts that may come during the update.

Upgrading the ROM is no more difficut than installing a program.

I am on my second Touch Pro from Verizon. I upgraded the ROM on the first one without incident and the GPS worked as expected. However the phone would not charge using a car charger.

The replacement phone came with, to all appearances, the upgraded ROM. However, I noticed that when I turned it on for the first time the unit just booted. There was no first time provisioning as I expected. And the GPS did not work.

I called Verizon and PCD and incredibly enough, technical support at both were unaware of the upgrade ROM or that it unlocks the GPS! I was astonished that tech support at PCD claimed that the upgrade did not unlock the GPS even though it says so right in the readme in the zip file.

In the end I just re-flashed the ROM (ran the upgrade program downloaded from PCD). Afterward, the first thing I did was run Quick GPS, check the GPS setup and install and run Bing. The GPS worked. Installed Google Maps. The GPS worked. Only then did I install the remaining programs.

It has been three months since I received the first Verizon Touch Pro.

Is this an issue for Verizon only? I'm a Sprint user and my GPS has worked from day one, without flashing the ROM. IN fact, I don't even know if there is an official Sprint ROM upgrade.

The Verizon Touch Pro was originally shipped with the GPS disabled for anything other than VZ Navigator. The ROM upgrade unlocked the GPS and added Visual Voice Mail.

I have no knowledge about the Touch Pro from other carriers.

I have Sprint and tried flashing the ROM without success. It would not update. I checked the sprint site for download and it said the 1.03.651.4 was the latest although we all know different. Has anyone had success updating with Sprint?

Jones,

Scroll up just a bit on this link and it will show you how to flash. It has official ROMS as well as new modified ones (so you can use WinMo 6.5 instead of 6.1). Just follow the steps and it should work fine. I'm using the EnergyRom that has a bunch of programs pre-installed (and they are all updated to the most recent versions). Really fast and stable...

Here is the link for Flashing a ROM: Flashing for Raphael CDMA aka Herman - xda-developers

Shogun,

Thanks for the reply. I was going to leave it as is, but decided to go ahead and try again. It worked like a charm and I took your advice and used the EnergyROM. I love it. My battery life is substancially better and the look and feel are so much better. My only issue is not having the start menu as I was used to that for frequently used programs. I guess I'll just have to learn the organization system for programs that is set up now.

Thanks again.

Ya, 6.5 is designed to be more finger friendly so they made the menu into icons instead of listed programs. I'm still getting used to it myself, but I did find that if you hold your finger on one of the icons, you can move it to a position in the list that works better for your person priorities. I moved the System, Utilities, Settings and Multimedia tabs to the top and the Flashlight right below etc. It'll take getting used to (as all new OS' are), but ya, I really like the look and feel of the Energy Rom too.

Glad you like it!

I finally figured out how to move those icons around. I was a little disappointed to learn that the EnergyROM didn't have Voice Command. I had just got used to using it. Supposedly when 6.5 is officially released it's going to have the new and improved TellMe Voice Command. I refuse to buy Voice Command especially since it came free with my original version.

I know that the Energyrom used to have VC but he's since removed it. Probably was causing a conflict with WM 6.5. But keep check his link because he updates all the time and hopefully will add that new version you were talking about.

Jones,

Just to let you know that there is a new EnergyRom update that has the new version of VoiceCommand that you were hoping for. I'm going to upgrade later on today to check it out...

Thanks Shogun! I'll have to check that out this evening.

Have you had any issues with 6.5 crashing. Not so much crashing as the screen shutting off and a soft reset is the only way I've found to get it back on. Happens about every 1.5 days, I've been trying to figure out what I'm doing when it happens. Usually when I'm on a call. It seems to get stuck in the "upright blank screen" position. Maybe the new version will fix it.

I haven't noticed any of crashing, no. Maybe it's a conflict with another program? Not sure.

BTW, it looks like I lied to you (sort of). I installed the new ROM and Voice Command has been removed again. In my defence, the chef specifically highlighted VC was back on it, but it's not on there now. There are a few other new things that are better (a slightly newer Opera for instance), but I think VC still has a problem with 6.5.

Oh well, you should flash it anyway, just to see if it will fix your crashing. Good luck!

The latest EnergyRom came out on the 20th and it's even sleeker. BTW, Voice Command doesn't come with the ROM, but he has a link to add VoiceCommand on afterwards (hence the reason why I saw it in the picture).

My favourite thing with the latest is that it actually kicks in your GPS (or likely aGPS) to locate your location so it will give you an accurate weather report where you are standing. You can still set up the cities as before, but if you don't want to edit to get your specific city, it will find you anyway! Love's it!

I haven't updated since the 11th, but I just flashed with yesterday's update. I have my voice command and so far the system is totally stable. I haven't played with the weather update yet, but so far everything else is great. I actually crashed it first and was up until 3 last night trying to figure out how to save it. I was stuck without any ROM and had to hold power and volume down to get it back into boot loader. Everything is gravy now.

Ya, when I first started updating new roms back on my Mogul, I had a terrible fright that I'd killed the phone. Luckily a bit of persistence paid off and the ROM finally took. It's even worse when I was doing it for my landlords' Mogul and I thought I turfed it too. Oh well, it's a lot easier and safer now. And once your phone is unlocked, you can kill a bunch of steps.

But ya, the new Energyrom that just came out is sweet. It seems to hog a little more memory than the last incarnation, but I have yet to see it lag because of it. Oh, and the weather function seems to use agps to find your location and update the weather. Just a matter of clicking on the normal weather icon in Manila to activate.

Anyway, glad you got your phone up and running and glad you like the new ROM too...
