Strange Phantom Issues

My Touch Pro is a stock, Sprint ROM. It has not been dropped, abused, exposed to water, etc. I'm the first owner.

It has been displaying some strange problems that does not clear after a soft reset. I have no done a hard reset yet.

Here are the problems.

1) The long press end key stopped working. I tried switching it to one function-lock, vs the menu, but nothing brings it up. It will beep after 5 seconds, but no functionality.

2) The onscreen keyboard defaults to numbers and ABC does not switch it back over to regular key functions. I managed to resolve this by going to the 'phone,' setting in settings and it corrected itself for some reason.

3) The phone always dims the backlight after 5 seconds. I switched off 'auto dim,' adjusted the brightness higher, turned off powersaving, but it still dims the display after 5 seconds, which is really annoying when watching videos.

A hard reset is probably in order, but the problem is without knowing a cause or possible reason for these issues, then even if a hard reset temporarily clears the issues they will just resurface.

Also, if I am going to hard reset the device, I may as well flash with a Sprint ROM someone else has cooked up.

Any advice or ideas?

Some other things I noticed:

1) The auto-fill had stopped working.

2) When the device auto dimmed before a light touch on the enter button would wake the back light back to full. This also stopped working.

I bit the bullet and hard reset the device for the first time today and it did resolve all these issues.

I'm still troubled because I don't know what caused these issues and am pretty sure they will return at some random point in time again, which is really annoying.

If anyone has a clue or can point me to an existing thread with answers on these sorts of random problems I would be grateful.

Since the phone is now working well, you might think about just backing up the registry using your favorite backup app and saving it for future use. If the issues do reappear, restore it and see if they go away. That has its own issues if you are changing things with some frequency, but may not be a bad way to go.

The registry is really a fairly ugly thing that gets corrupted far too often on any Windows platform.

I use sprite backup and have it make a full backup every night at 3am and keep 2 weeks of backups. This way, I can almost always go back to a stable configuration after hosing things (saved my bacon more than once), plus I get the added stability of a soft reset happening every day to clear out the cobwebs.

The phone was stable and exactly as I wanted it to be for about 1 month. I didn't add or change anything. We were out on vacation where I used the media player for hours during a drive through the car stereo using the USB/headphone adapter.

When we stopped I found the long press end key not working. Then I noticed the on screen keyboard problem.

I also think it was a registry issue, but pocket mechanic's registry cleaner didn't help.

All my data is on the 8GB card and instead of installing 30+ cool apps that I rarely use I just installed the 10 I constantly use after the hard reset.

Will keep this post alive if my phone goes nuts again or if I find out more information.

Thanks for the advice on the back up software. Did consider going that route, but right now my phone is pretty stock and I guess installing 10 apps isn't a big deal.

If my phone goes to a more complicated state again and the time investment for a manual rebuild becomes prohibitive I will go the back up route.
