Mogul User - is the Touch Pro right for me?

I'll try to be as specific on my needs here as possible. I'm looking for a new phone as my Mogul has been hovering between good; and utterly unusable since I got it (via Lockline ftw!) to replace my PPC-6700. I'm no stranger to WinMo and PDA phones here. Let's start of with how my Mogul is set up:

- SPB Mobile Shell for finger shortcuts. This of course would be gone with TF3D
- SPB Pocket Plus for remappable buttons, 1-button locking, battery/memory gauges and document shortcuts. I also prefer its Task Manager over HTC's.
- SPB Finance for all my Savings/Checking needs
- Agile Messenger for my IM needs
- TorchLight for when I can't find my damn keys at 5am before I leave for work.
- Skyfire, Opera Mini 4.1, and Opera Mobile 9.5 for browsing
- TomTom for Navi
- Stock 512MB card, and NO APPS are installed on the card; all are on device memory.
- I'm running 3.56 from Sprint, no cooked ROMs this time around (although my 6700 had one, so I'm familiar with them).

My Problems with the Mogul specifically.

1. Slow, SLOW, SLOW!!! I need WinMo to be a littler swifter on a Touch Pro than on the 6700 and Mogul. I use no glyph cache hacks, etc. It's painful; when I really need to get something done, my Mogul knows this, and flips me the finger. Opera Mobile for me is a last resort, it eats my Mogul alive. This is my absolute #1 complaint. I need to run the apps listed. If this phone cannot handle them better than the Mogul, it's as good as telling me I need to think about iPhone country. Seriously; just because I have Agile and Text Messaging running does NOT MEAN my Mogul should take SIX(!!!!) seconds to rotate the screen when I flip the keyboard out. NO NO NO!

2. After 1 year of use, a few thousand e-mails, and about 5000 text messages, my keyboard is SHOT. My Fn key barely works, and many keys get stuck! I baby this phone, I don't handle it with sticky or dirty fingers/hands. My Send/End keys are also barely working.

3. SLOW phone call reaction time. I'm missing calls when it rings for less than a full second, only to learn later that the caller heard 4-5 rings. Huge no-no. Phone first, data device second.

4. Constant disconnection from data. It's been this way since day 1, and Sprint keeps telling me this is inherent of the Mogul and in my area (Baltimore, MD - supposedly the thickest CDMA coverage blanket in the world). The only way to reinstate data is to reboot the phone, disabling the phone or data only from Comm Manager is a no go for fixing this. Firmware also has failed to fix this issue.

Since I've babbled enough; how's everyones Touch Pro's on these issues? I'd miss so much if I went with an iPhone or Blackberry; but these issues coupled with my lack of faith in HTC's devices (sexy as they are), might mean it's time to re-evaluate.

theres virtually NO buttons to customize save the phone key...

navi is as better on this phone because GPS was designed with the phone rather than an afterthought with the Mogul

torchlight or any other ppc light program should work

skyfire is not yet designed for the VGA screen. opera is standard and works much better than skyfire. opera does not support embedded links yet. there is an update to opera but im not sure if that is addressed.

stock ROM is fine for me. this uint is not SLOW but muc faster out of the box than the Mogul is. more device memory means you can store more if youd like and run more programs without getting sluggish results

the keyboard seems robust but i have not typed 5K+ messages yet so the jury is out. i had the Mogul since day one of it being on sale thru sprint and all buttons still work fine. i may not have used the keyboard as much as you so YMMV with my info and MY use...

if you have many contacts in your device thaat will cause a little delay in looking up the CID info to display on screen. its probably less noticeable since the PRO has a faster Processor and more ram but the more you build up your contacts the more it could become an issue down the road

i dont live in baltimore so i cant comment but i never had constant disconnects here in ATL with the Mogul OR now with the PRO-- i have had the PRO since oct. 24th and no issues with dropped calls or data disconnects. again, i never had that issue before

The only one of those things that could cause you trouble with the Touch Pro is the data connection/reception; that is often dependent on the specific phone model and your location, unfortunately the only way to find out how it works is to have a phone in hand.

Assuming that pans out, you should be quite happy with the TP.

I think it takes a lil to get used to coming from the Mogul but there are virtually no customizable buttons. The Processor speed is very noticable and TF3d is a nice addition but was not a big seller for me. Nice crisp screen. Also it really does stand out. I think after you get used to it you will love it just takes a while to get out of the mindset of the Mogul

Welp I did get to play with a Touch Pro yesterday, I dunno.. I wasn't really that impressed. The chrome trim around the sides of the phone are CERTAIN to wear away, and it's still the same thickness as the Mogul, save for maybe a hair thinner. While the higher-res screen was nice and all, it seemed a little smaller than the Mogul, which coupled with the higher-res made things a little harder to read. Also, the flush screen reflected ALOT of light (one of my concerns about the iPhone as well), but I'm sure an Invisible Shield would remedy this. The zoom wheel didn't seem to be all that swift nor did the tilt sensor. I'm not sold on another 2 years @ Sprint either despite a 25% monthly service discount. I just don't know; I'd probably jump to AT&T for the Fuze. I want to play with it again, since the store rep was standing all up in my **** while I was checking out the phone.

We shall see.

I have no idea what you are talking about with the chrome trim. Why would it wear away?

I don't see why you would jump to AT&T for the same phone? Be sure to check out the different keyboard layout also.

I have a strong feeling I won't even be keeping this Verizon Touch Pro 3 days or activating it. The main reason: the 5 way navigation button sucks! I can barely get it to scroll right/left, up/down is not difficult but right/left is near impossible without concentrating. Coming from the XV6800 aka Mogul, this thing is a piece of junk from a hardware standpoint. I REALLY miss the OK button, so much easier than going all the way up to the top corner and missing the on-screen OK every once in a while, where's my buttons to push! The only physical benefit is the 5 row keyboard although Sprints is much nicer as I'm used to smaller keys already from the XV6800.

Another deal breaker is the lack of external antenna port for those long drives, I have a car magnetic mount wilson antenna and never drop calls on road trips with it connected to the XV6800.

Battery got smaller but phone is just about same weight as XV6800, another negative.

Maybe sprints nav button is easier to scroll left/right with but making that a one piece plastic cover for all those buttons does not work well for me. I don't know how others are managing, I accidentally open the wrong programs or call the wrong person by trying to navigate using the hardware buttons. Seems they want to get users away from using buttons and bring more onscreen fingerprints like iphone, no thanks.

I'm sticking with my XV6800 for sometime, even if I have to replace the same model again, it runs faster and battery life goes long way for me. We'll see if HTC continues to offer additional phones with more or fewer buttons.

I'm glad someone asked this question as I've been looking for a replacement for my XV-6800 when I'm eligible for my new every 2 (of course that's not until August so I'm sure something else will be out by then). I'm leaning toward just keeping the XV-6800 past the 2 years since with my luck I'll get the Touch Pro and then a month later a newer device will be released.

I did get a chance to play with a Touch Pro and was really impressed with the internal memory capacity and the ability to use up to a 16 GB card on the Touch Pro. I wasn't used to the interface though so it was kind of awkward getting around.

The iPhone is not an option as I don't want AT&T service and everyone has one. I like to customize my phone.

Just my thoughts......

I think you can use a 16 gig card on the Mogul too. And a 32 gig when they come out. I currently use an 8, and it works great. I agree with those that feel the Pro is a poor upgrade to the Mogul. For everything they gave, they took something away. The button issue, battery life, removed the IR Port, etc., etc. I emailed HTC and asked them when they would come out with a Mogul Pro HD. No answer yet.
