I know about core player and it looks good but is there one out there that might be free that can do about as much? I'd like to download and play AVIs but not all are compatible with divx player.

divx player is free and so is kinoma freeplay. Both are just fine and shouldb suit your needs. Search them and you will find them - they are also both linked @ xda if u search there.
