Need to know some more info, specifically, the version of Exchange used etc. Also, seeing the Activesync logs on the device might be helpful. I've had my TP2 (on VZW) for a few weeks now with no issues to speak of. I did note that when I'm using the WiFi that push is hit-or-miss and that items start synching when I end the WiFi connection.
btw, I'm an Exchange expert if you do need more help, I have been designing/deploying messaging services since before it was an RTM product in the 4.0 days (seriously).
I normally have mine set to sync every 15 minutes, but when I just changed it to when items arrive, it immediatly showed a new email. I haven't had any problems either connected to the PC, wifi or over the vzw network.
we can take this offline if you dont want to say anything here..
can you give me some questions to ask the IT guys? i have a direct email to a guy now. he just closed my ticket because this has been open for about 2 weeks and it looks bad on his clock if this ticket stays open... but any info you can give me let me have it!
for starters, can the certificate cause any issues with push?
can something on the server end cause the connection to drop on the phone end?
No problem, I'll send you a personal message as this could get ugly.
Certs - this is one of those "if it works, it will work always" deals (and is the biggest gotcha, especially for those, like me, who run a server that uses self-signed certs from an internal CA). Probabl not the issue in your case...
Marc, we can talk too if you want. I have been using it without any issue, and just copied my CA and CERT for my own home server over, hard reset, installed them and synced to them playing with the time settings, and I haven't had any issues syncing between anything.
Once setup with the work server, I have zero issues getting items as they arrive, and in fact, I get them quicker on the phone than through Outlook.

Need help setting up your i730/i830 or other WM2003/WM5 Phone, as well as the other hacks I have done, check out the MRailing Guides and Links
Marc..
Ahh the it guys come out of the wood work to help one of their own.. I love it. Can I play too? I've set up all kinds of PDA's to sync with exchange.. yeah we need more info. Are you getting a any error message at all? what does it say in the logs? Do you have access to what's going on on the server side? and Yes certs.. That was the first thing to popped into my head. You should be able to use the same cert that you would use when you access exchange via OWA. Then save it and install it on the phone.

i could post the logs if you all want to see whats going on.
the job runs Exchange 2003 sp2
in a nutshell the wireless connection just times out and just drop the connection to the server. usually it shows "connected" but over some time it will just drop and say "synchronized X:XX" with the gray ASync icon.
this is the 3rd TP2 i have had and all three has shown this issue...
how are things setup on the phone?
data is active
push in enabled
not roaming
PRL and Profile data is updated
my account is setup to sync (i had no issues when running exchange on the TP1)
i can access the OWA site from my phones browser just fine
no error messaage of any sort. connection just drops.
i have an MSN account and have that account on the phone and the push for that account works fine.
i tested google sync and had slow sync with that. i didnt get reliable results with it.
sometimes i can soft reset and it will connect and stay but after a few minutes or so it will just drop. a couple of days ago it was connected for several hours! no rhyme or reason as to why..
i am in a good sprint signal.
i dont have my TP1 to test anymore...
the server name is the same as the OWA access URL
the cert is taken directly off the intranet site. i know you can get the certificate off the OWA site. and id like to grab it there to test, how can i get the cert from the OWA site?
thanks all for the help. IT has done all they can and know of nothing else. there is limited support at the job since its a crackberry shop with phones next and Win mo devices behind those.
i dont know of anyone who is using a win mo device.. all crackberry or iphones... so i cant test with someone elses account...

any opinions are appreciated...
Yer right this is a head scratcher.
I don't think it is a cert issue, because you would be getting an error that would indicate that. To get the cert from the OWA site just log into OWA using IE and click on the certificate (shield) on the address bar. View the certificate and look for the option to copy it. Once you save it you can copy it to the phone manually and save it to the trusted root store. .
Do you know anyone with another exchange server that you can sync to, to see if it is an issue with your server? just an idea.
If your having what seems to be connection related things I wonder if its the "heartbeat" thingy. I've never had to tweak that but it is essentially the refresh rate that the phone uses to talk to the server. Just a thought that I'm throwing out there for discussion!?

i dont know of anyone who has an exchange server...
someone else mentioned that.. the "hearbeat"... im have been wondering , even before you mentioned it, if that could be a possible cause...
yesterday i was up around 6am and i unplugged the phone from the laptop. the phone was happily connected to exchange thru the internet as it normally does.
welp all day the phone was connected to exchange wirelessly with no issue. i would send test messages from my crackberry to the PRO2 and it would get them thru exchange nearly instantly as it should! i got back home around 1 ish pm and the phone was still connected right up until i plugged it back into the laptop...
so i dont know why it will connect and then it will drop. sometimes in the past when i have unplogged it from the computer it will stay connected and will for a while but then drop, sometimes it will immediately drop if i unplug it from the laptop and sometimes it will stay connected as it did yesterday.
im not sure if wifi messes with this or not. i have wifi on and it sniffs my network and connects but once i plug it to the computer the data goes thru the internet and not wifi..
sooooooo...... yeah head scratcher... i am going to see how it behaves today. i have not done a soft reset in a couple days so ill see how the phone works without soft resetting... and i usually do a soft reset just because..
Is there a remote possibility that the Exchange server has a max number of mobile connections or vpn connections? Based on what you are saying it looks like you may not be having problems at lower demand times. I am using Excchange 2007 and don't remember if 2003 maxed the connections. Also, is it possible that bandwidth saturation is slowing things down so much that your phone is timing out from no response.
im not sure how i would check to see if that is a possibility... i never had this issue with the PRO1 and as soon as i got the PRO2 i started noticing this. i appreciate your input kwickag, maybe that will spark some other discussion...
i may be able to find out if you can give me the right questions to ask.
also, as of 12:53PM eastern, the phone is still connected to Exchange. its been that way since about 7:45 am when i took it off the bottle (haha when i unplugged it from the laptop).. im going to do a soft reset and see if it will "re-latch" after i soft reset.....
ok so soft reset and Async does not reconnect back to exchange. manual sync works of course but right out of a soft reset async just does not connect....
oooh i dont use VPN to connect to exchange. i am directly accessing exchange wirelessly using the OWA website as the server and my username/password for login credentials... they are running exchange 2003 sp2...

Ok, then it isn't a max connections problem, unless owa has a setting for that (I don't use owa).
