Why do I loose my signal and not get it back?

Sometimes when i get no signal or very poor signal, the phone will have zero bars. When I walk back to a great signal area, the phone will still show zero bars and won't work. I have to manually turn off the phone and turn on the phone for the phone to pick up signal again. This happens sometimes and I would miss phone calls which is very annoying. I hope this is a software issue and can be fixed soon.

from Lazarus
In my earlier testing I did see this and it stemmed from two things. One, the rescan interval time was set to a very high value as its max (AT&T version is set to a max of 90 seconds now) this setting could make it so if you are out of coverage for a long period of time it could take up to 10 minutes or more (depending on the setting) for the device to rescan for service. The other was a bug that I believe we completely eliminated. There were some instances where the device would go out of coverage (more often on the very edge of coverage) and when it came back into coverage it would esentially be "stuck" and would not see the network. I will have to look back in my notes on exactly what was altered but in the last round of beta tests I had zero reports of this bug.

Potential Solution
Burr Oak Software has produced Phone Today, a Today Screen plug in that gives you lots of useful information about your phone. It may help with this problem. To get it working, first remove the T-Mobile Battery Monitor and Today Screen Applications (see FAQ answer for this topic). Then install Phone Today. Finally, change the settings of Phone Today to XDA/MDA and Line: Cellular Line. You may need to do a hard reset if you wish to reomve this application.

Other Comments:
If you waited long enough, the device will rescan the network, and you'll get signal strength again. It may have to do with what Lazarus mentioned: you have to wait until the unit has elapsed its rescan interval (apparently 90 sec for the ATT XDA, don't know for sure how long it is on T-Mobile), and then the unit rescans and shows you the new signal strength.

Most GSM phones will rescan for a signal when the "End Call" button is pressed. It is a generally unpublished but very useful little feature. If you knew there was coverage where you were and you had zero bars, then you could press "End Call" and usually the bars would leap to life. Apparently, the XDA/T-Mobile is not set this way.
