SMT 5800 Release on Verizon...NO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VERY BAD NEWS on the Verizon release of the SMT 5800!!!!! On the SMT 5800 I talked to a senior Verizon developer today that said he didn't know of any near future 5800 release!!!
He did say that the 5800 was approved to run on the Verizon network in Nov. it is not listed on the current equipment list which means it is VERY unlikely that Verizon is still planning to carry it. He thinks it might be because the 6800 release was so late that Verizon scrapped the 5800 so that people buy the Samsung and 6800, which they invested in the "newer chip set" whatever that means. He said that there is an outside chance of this phone releasing but it wouldn't be until Spring 2008. HTC already launched the 5800 successor in the S730!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By he time VZ did launch the 5800 if it still plans to it will be old technology!!!!!!!!!!! He did say that because it is still on the approved equioment list if I can find an unlocked phone you can activate it on Verizon.
I am going to suck it up, go to AT&T tomorrow and switch carriers. With the merger with Cingular I cannot imagine their network lagging behind Verizon for long....with GMS I can at least be free to use the equipment I need/want. VZ is not gearing up towards the techie or business user. They offered me a Blackberry Pearl which is a very nice phone for the everyday user or soccer mom that needs to pencil in her Pilates classes, but for the hardcore business user, it falls short. the 6800 has muscle but it is very hard to make a simple phone call with the touch screen alone. With my 700w I can at least dial a quick call via the keypad at a traffic light. It took multiple tried with the 6800 screen dial pad before I finally got the number right.

After the thrid reboot of my Q (for today)...I went over to my local VZW store.
The gent there said the feeling he has from his HTC rep is January...
VZW is crazy/lazy....anyway, may contract is up in April. I'm thinking of doing what many of us have done - and move to ATT.
ARGH!!!!!

This BigBen07 guy has two posts, the text for each being exactly the same. I count no fewer than 53 exclamation points and three frowny faces in his post. He's a member since yesterday.
It might make sense to treat as discounted the prediction that the s720 will not launch.

Verizon is very slow to release, but they seem to eventually release the phones once they have announced them. Therefore, I think you're right Jed. This post does not seem accurate.

Wow, so I guess you are part of the Welcome Wagon Committee...thanks Jed for making me feel so welcome by slaming a newbie. I was trying to share what I was told by a highly reputable source from Verizon. Just because I haven't been part of the forum long or am showing my disappointment/frustration to this news doesn't mean that I should be disregarded. I have been searching the net very long and hard for any update to the HTC phones for Verizon. I happened to stumble onto PDAPhone as I use my phone for business and need it to meet some very specific needs. I have been with Verizon for over 5 years and am VERY reluctant to leave because of the incredible network reliability (for the know it all that claimed I worked for AT&T, I guess this also blows your theory out of the water, huh?) The last update from the high-level Verizon contact was that there were severe software issues with the 5800 that HTC had to rectify before Verizon would let the phone launch. With the late arrival of the 6800 to stores it is believed that the focus is being shifted on this unit as the premier Verizon smartphone. The HTC 5800 missed any chance of the all important pre-holiday launch that lis needed for strong retail sales. As I noted, HTC already released the S730...by the time the S720 hits Verizon it will be old news. I was told that a Verizon launch would be delayed well into Spring '08 if it launches at all. I guess I'm full of B.S., Jed...BTW, it's less than a week before Christmas and not a creature was stirring, not even a HTC 5800.
