I ordered through over the phone through Verizon customers service and for $15 they overnighted the phone. Also allowed me to order all of the accessories. Received the phone today along with and holster/belt clip, batter, and car charger. Phone looks great and I will play with it more later.
For what it's worth, I was in a Verizon store today and started talking with a rep. He had a dummy phone on hand and let me play with it for a bit. The phone is smaller than I had expected, but surprisingly heavy. The rep didn't know where the extra heft was coming from. The sliding mechanism was nice though, very solid and stable. Looking forward to picking this up in the next few weeks.
After months of waiting for a new phone, I also decided to give the SMT5800 a try.
One question, when I bought it online, I was forced to select the Unlimited Data Plan in order to order the phone. However, the text at the top said that I could select a data plan for $0, but that wasn't a choice.
So, can I cancel the data plan later? -- they gave me $100 ADD credit for signing up for the data plan, and I'm fine to keep it for 2 months, but don't want to be stuck with it for 2 years necessarily.
I was excited to find out about the new phone but disappointed to find out it's a smartphone. Guess I'll hold onto the Q a little longer...
Feeling kind of confused by this as the Q is a smartphone as well.
But if you want a windows mobile professional version of this phone that's pretty much the Samsung i760, isn't it? Plus they throw in wifi. That's the phone I was thinking of until I realized i could get the smartphone version with the SMT5800. I wanted to avoid the complexity of the PDAPhone based on my experience of the Samsung i730.

It's funny to see that there are a lot of jaded former i730 owners out there. I owned the i730 and thought I wanted the i760, but at the last minute, I decided I wanted to keep it simple and went with the Blackjack 2 from AT&T. It's been fantastic. I love the simplicity of the Windows Mobile Standard OS. Unlike Professional, it's not trying to cram an entire computer into a device the size of a deck of cards. I tried the 6800 in the Verizon store the other day and hated it compared with the BJ2. The 6800 actually felt much slower and clunkier because it's loaded up with so much functionality. People seem to be happy with the i760, but I truly think that one of the advantages of the 5800 is that it has the nice & simple Windows Mobile Standard edition OS. I haven't had a chance to use the 5800 yet, but becuase of it running Standard and having the great layout on the face of the phone, I think people who are looking for phone first/pda 2nd will love the 5800. In other words, don't dismiss it simply because it isn't the professional version.

I also saw the same thing about the 0 pay plan............typical VZW.
JUst cancell it in a few days after you activiate it.

Anyone comment on voice dialing and speaker phone, specifically because there's no dedicated keys as far as i see? is this a pain to use and/or access? Also battery life comments with or without extended life? I'm coming from a Q so i dont need a lot to be impressed. thanks

I agree with everything you say, but I would attack to the death your right to say it.
How is the SD slot cover? I just switched to Verizon from AT&T and loved my Vox (this phone's GSM cousin), but the rubber microSD cover started to get loose after a few months. Does this phone have the cheap rubber cover?

Volume control is on a spring loaded slider which you hold down to activiate voice dialing...very easy to use. You simply hold down the send key to activate speaker phone...also easy to use.
I'm using the standard battery and the life is questionable. I charged the phone all night, have had a moderate phone day (30 minutes or so) and the phone says 50% battery life.

Did you leave Wifi on? That will drain the battery very quickly.

That's the only thing I really don't like about the 5800...the MicroSD slot has NO cover at all. I've already accidentally ejected the card once...have to watch out from now on.
