Kamalatug, I feel your pain. I'm not buying a new phone until Christmas, but at the rate Verizon is going I'm worried the SMT5800 won't be out by then. Worse yet, the reason I'm waiting is because I've noticed that if a phone comes out in the summer Verizon will slash the price for holiday sales (LG enV and Moto's Q went for around $100 last Christmas). I'm not sure they will do this for a brand new phone.
Anyone else irked that Verizon is bragging about some new phones (that must have materialized out of thin air) for the 2007 holiday season? We've known about some of these other phones for over a year. What's the hold up?!
What makes it that much more ridiculous is that Verizon believes the new LG Voyager will be the iPhone killer. Boy does Verizon have its collective head up its ass.
Curse Verizon's monopoly on the Washington DC Metro! Otherwise, I'd probably drop them, since I'm fed up with their politics. Considering Verizon is now #2 in the cell phone market, maybe they'll start acting like #2 and come up with incentives we want (like rollover minutes) to start luring people back in.
A bit of a rant, sorry...
Kamalatug, I feel your pain. I too ride the metro every day in Washington DC. But, even still, I'm seriously considering switching to AT&T. I long for choice and freedom with respect to my cellular equipment.
HI I am new to this board and from canada I was wondering how you link this phone to your computer for the adress book and todo lists. can someone tell me if it is easy or not. I am looking to buy this phone but not sure, I also like the motorola q, and some of the blackberrys. the Palm is also nice but do not like a touch screen. I have never had a phone like this before always had just a regular phone. also doe this hone have a gps with routes on it.
The phone comes with a cable. You hook it up to the computer via the USB port. Windows Activesync will set up a partnership with your phone. It will sync your phone address book and calendar with Outlook. You might be able to do this wirelessly as well. Not sure about wireless sync (bluetooth or IR) for this phone.
Not a very big forum for this phone as compared to the 760. Does anybody have any kind of clue on when this phone (UTS xv5800/HTC Libra (5800)) is coming out on Verizon? I'm very interested in getting this phone as i have played with it at a Qwest Kiosk in my local mall and like the size and functionallability of the phone. I want a phone first and a pda second (from what i can see the i760 is PDA first phone second).
I'd add to this that I'm not that big on just buying phone online and not getting my dirty little mits on it.
Also, I send an email to a VZW press rep asking if they had a firm release date for the SMT5800. Here's the reply:
"No, we don't have a firm date for that device but it should be available prior to the holidays."
i am anxiously awaiting the release of the 5800 on vzw. i want to check out the Q9C and the 5800 side by side before i make my move on a new gadget. the more i see of the 5800, the more i like it. it has been over a year since the 1st pics popped up on the net for this.
and to answer xh3dx, the smartphone os units like the Q's and the 5800 work great as a phone and a pda - much easier to use than the ppc touchscreen os units. pulling up contacts is so easy - just start typing a name on the keyboard and the matches start popping up on the screen. i had a sammy i730 for a year and a half and switched to the Q and never looked back. i dont ever want to use a stylus again.
I agree with you totally Miata492. I replaced i730 with a Motorola Q. Love the functions on the i730. Hated the touch screen and instability. Besides, how many people actually need all those advanced PocketPC functions? Not me. The Q is perfect for me. Got a great deal on a used one from ebay, and I still have the option to purchase the SMT5800 with my new every 2 if vzw ever releases it.
I was trying to hold onto my i730 until the SMT5800 came out. But, my Sammy was crashing several times per day, so I had to take emergency action. Bottom line is, I love my Q. I don't plan go back to a PocketPC again. I'll need to do a side by side comparison to see if the SMT5800 will be worth the switch. The2 biggest selling points for me are WM6 and form factor. It would be great to have a phone that looks like a phone again.
Also, HTC manufactured this phone with WiFi. I wonder if Verizon stripped it out or just disabled it. If it's just disabled, I suppose it wouldn't take much to enable it. Surely someone on this site will figure out how and pass on the knowledge.
yeah, it would be interesting to find out if the wifi is buried in it and disabled by the big vzw! im sure that if it is in there it would not be that hard to enable it...

If it means anything, I have had the exact same experience as you. I was waiting for the i760 and got a loaner q9m to replace my balky i730 and realized that although the q is not quite for me, WM6 STD is going to be much more reliable than WM6 Pro. The SMT5800 offers all the benefits of the i760 and none of the wierdnesses in terms of key placement while avoiding the complexity of the PPCPhone.
The i760 just went on sale today. It is selling for as little as $99. That's after the online discount, NE2, and ADD (Advanced Device Discount aka device that needs an unlimited data plan). I wonder if the SMT5800 will be this cheap.
BTW, Jed, I feel your pain and your joy. I've had my Q for a week, and I'm still not use to having a normal keyboard. I can actually see when caps lock is on. There's a number lock (NO number lock on the i730, the phone helper hack fixes, but it capitalizes letters if you type them too fast; too = tO and letters = leTers). I hear i760 has a retarded keyboard too. No Tab key! What's that about?
Anyhoo, HTC does a good job on keyboards and smartphones. So, no worries about the SMT5800 keyboard. I like the landscape layout. Especially since there's a numeric keypad on the front for 1 hand dialing.
Hi just anouther qiuke question I am looking at the htc5800 or the htc6800 or the Palm treo wx. I am in Quebec Canada and I kow the Palm does not have the 1x for internet on the bell mobility network, I was wondering what pda phone is better.
Does Anybody Have any more information about this phone coming out to verizon. it seems that nobody knows jack **** on this phone when it comes to verizon. or nobody cares. i went and played with the sammy i760 yesterday and didn't like how the interface worked so im holdin out for the Verizon Wireless SMT5800. maybe that'll satisfy my needs.
It came down to the Libra and the i760 as my two finalists. I have now obtained the i760.
1. It has WiFi.
2. It was available
I am very happy with the i760 as it was much smaller and handier than I had anticipated. In fact, I would not want to have to deal with with a phone / PDA much smaller than this. EVDO A was not important as it mainly affects upload speeds. Email and Internet speeds are quite snappy on EVDO 0 and the i760. WiFi works great.
The Libra is one fine looking device, though.
Cheers, all. I hope you find it was worth the wait, as I am sure you will.
I went into the the Verizon store today telling them that my i730 had finally died and threatened to switch to AT&T. My store manager made some calls for me and assured me that the 5800 is currently in testing and will be available by the end of the year. He even showed me that the 5800 was entered into their interal computer system.
I didn't like the i760 (sick of the stylus) and the Motorola Q9m is just too big. I almost bought the unlocked HTC S730 (GSM version of the 5800) and switched to AT&T to use it. Since I don't want to leave Verizon, I'm going to hold out for the 5800.
Anyone know what the best GPS software is for non-touchscreen smartphones? I understand that I need to move away from Tom Tom.
This Verizon web page has been up for about a week now, which is actually a good thing, because it means that it should be released soon.
Well that's good to know. I Just looked last night. i googled 'verizon smt5800' and that popped up. so i figured i would post. Does any body know if it is the S710 or S720. It looks like the 710 to me.
