Not sure just yet as to the upgrade-ability of our phones to it... but I'm checking on it.
So far i havent seen a way to just download it, when i do "Settings -> Windows Update" it tells me that there are no updates available and i'm not seeing anything on Verizon's site just yet.
If anyone has any info on this i would love to hear it. I'll also post back as i find more as well. In the mean time hear are a few links to MS about it.
So i called my local Verizon rep (an independent dealer not a corporate store, i find i get much more reliable info from this source... he's VERY good), anyway he told me that if it just came out, don't look for Verizon to move to it for at least six months. OUCH! But that he would keep checking his dealer channel update site and let me know when he sees something... he's got the same phone, so i know he's interested in it too.
Well i can believe that about Verizon, but i can't just take it... i know there has got to be a way!
Microsoft officially ANNOUNCED WM6.1 only yesterday and we want it to be on our phones today...
Verizon could not have 6.1 in their hands BEFORE official annoncement, so it will take some time for them to get it and have it available for us.
What's the big deal? Why do we need it today?
found this info on there...
"Other partners include Alltel Wireless, AT&T, ASUS, HP, HTC Corp., i-mate, Intermec Inc., Motorola, O2, Orange, Palm Inc., Pantech, Samsung, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, Sprint, T-Mobile USA Inc., T-Mobile International Inc., T-Mobile Germany, TELUS, Toshiba, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. The following new phones and updates were announced today:

If you're asking those questions, then there is something very different between you and me.
I tinker, modify, break, fix, break again, maybe fix again and tinker some more... it's a vicious little cycle but the point is, I'm rarely happy with good enough. I cant explain it any better than that, it's just who I am. So I guess my answer to "what's the big deal, and why do we need it" would be... if you have to ask that, than there is no why or big deal.
And that's OK.
@Miata492
Yeah, i cam across a lot of those articles yesterday as well. And while not surprised, still not happy! Thanks for the info!
I expect that it will be 6 months before VZW will have 6.1 for the 5800 - if ever.
I bet you are correct... actually, they will most likely wait for WM7... and then wait another year after that!
I wish they'd just open up their network and go the sim route so i could get the phone i want and activate it with them... sadly, i see the time frame of something like this being a little longer than hell freezing over.
it would be really nice if the update came from microsoft or the manufacturer via the "windows update" function they finally put in windows mobile! something tells me that vzw will never let anyone use that feature!!!

Wouldn't that be awesome... an update function that ACTUALLY updated!
But something tells me you are absolutely right.
Only way you are going to get it early is if somebody has the knowledge of how to cook their own roms. The HTC S710 and S730 both had WM6.1 custom ROMs to get to 6.1. I'd love to see somebody get our phones there because the new GUI looks very nice from all the screen shots I've seen.

My buddy over in Sweden just cooked a new ROM up for his Euro equivalent (s710) phone. we're in the middle of finding the required English files to do the same for ours. he's currently running the VOX screens... man those look stinkin good!
Nice! I was hoping somebody out there could cook a ROM for our phones and hopefully this turns out good. All we would need after that is for Verizon to activate the Rev A in it.
I don't know if it helps at all, but maybe Dr. Gonzo's ROMs over at XDA could be of help too since his ROMs seem to be the most popular for the s710.
And thanks, it's great to be back on the forums again!

I never said it was good to be "happy with good enough." And I have nothing but respect for people who modify and make products better and share their knowlege with the rest of us.
My only comment is that if I get WM6.1 on my SMT5800 phone in several months and not NOW, I'll survive... somehow.
After all, it a PHONE, not a computer. It's main function is to make and receive phone calls, which it does well the way it is. If an OS upgrade will improve the rest of the functions, great, but when people say they "cannot do their WORK" because Mobile IE is not good enough, I always wonder how important and complicated their work is, if it can be done on a phone...
That's it.
I've tried out the cooked rom for htc s710 a month ago, but i was not satisfied. numerous features did not work correctly, it was running really slow, and the basic functions mentioned above, making and receiving phone calls, have been compromised due os busyness.
i flashed back to wm6. If you made good experience with self cooked 6.1 roms for the htc s710 vox, let me know. I'd like to have it as well.
well, I have an SMT5800, it says its suppost to have WM6 on it, but when I look at the specs, says 5.2 for almost everything, anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? or is that how its suppost to be? (keep in mind I got my SMT5800 at a Verizon Corporate dealer) Thanks.
