What are your 5800 (Libra) quirks? What works - What doesn't - And why

I wanna start off by saying that this is NOT a "rag on this phone" thread!

My intent here is more of a try at something like what we had in the 6700 forum, a type of known good - know bad (or glitchy - or buggy) software. Hopefully, if we can keep this civil and on topic, i would love to see this work it's way to a sticky for all to gain from... in the mean time, I'm gonna start off with laying out the software i have installed and the things I'm seeing. Please do the same! Hopefully we can whittle away at it and come up with enough experience to figure out what apps work and which ones are better steered away from.

Here goes...
Apps Installed:
-Chartcross GPS Test -- Ver 1.04 (Storage Card)
-Google Maps -- Ver 2.0.0.12 (Storage Card, but i only see it on the Device)
-MS Office Mobile -- Ver 6.1 (Storage Card)
-Orneta Notepad -- Ver 3.2.0 (Storage Card)
-Orneta Scissors -- Ver 1.2.0 (Storage Card)
-Resco Explorer -- Ver 6.15 (Device)
-Resco FTP -- Ver 6.15 (Device)
-Resco Photo Viewer -- Ver 5.34 (Device)
-Resco Reg Edit -- Ver 6.15 (Device)
-Resco System Toys -- Ver 1.32 (Device) ((Task Manager & Storage/Batt Monitor)
-IM+ -- Ver 2.14 (Storage Card)
-Skype -- Ver 2.2.0.36 (Device)
-Sprite BackUp -- Ver 6.1.0 Build 2192 (Device)
-TCPMP -- Ver 0.72RC1 (Starage Card (App & all PlugIns))
---TCPMP PlugIns---
------AC3
------FFMPRG
------FLV -- Ver0.4.2 (Flash Plugin)
------Vorbis LQ
-GPSdash2 -- Ver 1.53 (Storage Card)
-Gentimer -- Ver 2.01 (Storage Card)
-MS Live Search Mobile -- Ver2.5.2908.31943 (Storage Card)

Repeatable Glitches and Anomalies:
-Resco Photo Viewer crashs on new folder creation and image edit saving, also on emailing images.
-Resco Explorer crashs on moving/copying/pasting. (not always, but alot... need to track this one down abit.)
-Home screen background changes back to default layout, sometimes after system settings changes, sometimes after app setting changes... but easily once a day.
-All mail settings disappear... Exchange, POP, IMAP, TXT & MMS settings and messages GONE! happened 4 times now, currently i am making a minimum of 1 automated backup a day and usually alot more, one everytime i major edit something (read reg edits) or install/uninstall something.
-Lock ups when jumping between Resco apps and PIE.
-Random (as yet unknown) lock ups when running a certain combination of apps.
-Skype kills Bluetooth, cannot be re-enabled until after a soft reset.

Reg Edits (Hacks):
-PIE homepage change.
-PIE memory settings on Storage card. (Cache - Cookies - History)
-Uncertified app install. (SP_AllowCertificateInstall)
-

There are more little things, but right now I'm starting to overload and draw blanks... i will edit this post later to add links to the software i mentioned above, and also continue to add post on updates as i find more out about what is causing what and how i fix/workaround it. I hope you all do the same.

My most annoying glitch is sometimes when I have several apps running and press the home button I go to one of the other apps instead of the home page. The only other glitches I have noticed is a short freeze from time to time when reloading the home page but I have Facade so that is the problem there. The other glitch is that my horizontal pouch case with magnetic flap causes the screen to go from portrait to landscape and I understand why this happens. I would sure like to find a nice case with velcro closure or one with fewer magnets. I also do a daily backup with Sprite BU which I am sure helps to cleanup stuff and prevents a lot of memory leak glitches. My apps are:

SpriteBU 6.1 - device
SlovoEd En-Sp Dict - card
SplashId 4.0 - card
Facade 1.4 - device
Papyrus 1.3.10 - device
Resco Explorer/Reg Editor - card
Windows Live Search - device
Pocket Stars - card
SKTools Lite - card
TWC Smartphone - device
Egress 3.33 - device
EzQuote 1.11 - device
MissingSync - device
Bridge for Smartphone - card
Opera 8.65 - device

Resulting in 8MB free Storage Memory and 22MB free Program Memory after soft reset.

Frank

Forgot to mention hacks:
Changed HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE from 16384 to 32768
App Unlock with: SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab and SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab

Also one more glitch: Storage Card has disappeared once. Came right back when I removed and re-installed card. Using Sandisk 8GB card sold by VZ. I have seen this on other WM smartphones.

Issues -

The two issues I'm having so far is that the phone has locked up at random times. The other kinda annoying issue is sometimes the data on my storage card will appear to have vanished on my phone, but after a restart all the data is back. I've seen some other people via Google searches reporting this on other HTC devices as well. Some people said a format of the card has solved and I'm actually doing that as I write so post so "hopefully" it will solve that problem.

Gentimer by Rivia

Just purchased and install Gentimer by Rivia Software the other day.

For the most part, this is a really killer app!
-Unlimited Alarms that support WAV, WMA & MP3.
-5 customizable timers
-Stopwatch
-World time (up to 4 timezones with a world day/night map)
((this one is very handy for me as my colleagues are in Sweden)

I thought this was going to be a really nice all-in-one app. However, every time the alarm goes off in the morning the phone locks up... i have to then pull the battery to get the phone to respond.

I have a ticket in with customer service, but as yet have heard nothing back, they are in Europe, and there website does state to allow up to 48 hours for a response, it has now been 36, so I'm hoping to hear from them tomorrow.

I truly hope this is a fixable issue as i very much like this app... but I'm not holding my breath. I'll definitely will post back with any & all updates.

Just thought i would add to this works/doesn't work thread, and give anyone considering this app a first hand heads up.

They make a pretty popular product so I'm sure they'll want to help to some degree. I never really used it myself. Back when I was using two time zones I always used City Time and City Time Alarms.

I was just wondering if you can use Route 66 without having the data plan on your phone. I do not have the data so can't access internet, but was thinking that the GPS function might still work.

Route 66 is a complete navigation program. It does not use data at all. All the information it needs is stored in the maps.

Hey does our phone have internal GPS or do I need some sort of other device to use Route 66? I have it loaded on my phone, but get a message "the connection with the GPS receiver cannot be established. Please make sure that your GPS is switched on and is working properly."

Nope... no internal GPS in our Verizon version of this phone. you will need to get a Bluetooth GPS Receiver for your app to work.

Here is a thread that talks about a few options out there... but if you google "Bluetooth GPS Receivers" I'm sure you will find that there are many many options out there for you.

Happy hunting!

Were is the best (cheapest) place to get the route 66 program? I found the manufures website www.66.com mobile 8 ($149) is out, but it does not list our phone as compatible. Mobile 7 does not either. I have the Freedom Keychain GPS 2000 ordered just need the program. Also is my 4 gig card going to be enough or do I need an 8?

Thanks, Chris

Haha more people joining the Route 66 world! Such a impressive piece of GPS software that so little people seem to really know about.

Route 66 8 is for Symbian OS phones. Windows Mobile is at version 7. Looks like $149 is pretty much the default price for it everywhere. (Just checked Amazon) The map packs are massive that come with Route 66. For all the parts of the USA and Canada, you're looking at 3.80 gigs worth of maps. With the program, you'll hit 4 gigs. You can get away with a 4 gig card if you only have the map for the region you need as each map is on average around 450 megs. 7 sections for the US and 2 for Canada. If you want them all though, you'll fore sure want to pickup a 8 gig card. I'm personally using a 8 gig card myself since I install most programs to my storage card instead of the phone.

Good luck with the GPS. I've been nothing but happy with mine and it rocks that you can carry it around in your pocket. You'll be shocked at how good of signal it gets for being such a small unit. Just make sure in the Windows com manager that you assign a COM port to the GPS in the BT settings.

SMT5800 Pros:
Size
Dual Key Pads
Non-Touch Screen
2.0 Meg Camera

Cons:
Short battery life
"Loose" feeling when holding it due to the slide out keyboard
Can't listen to music (plugged into Car stereo) and take blue tooth calls at the same time
Can't turn off flashing lights without 3rd party sotfware
Voice Prompt dailing is no where near refined as my old Razor

The pros out weight the cons, except for the battery issue. I guess I will need to upgrade to the extended battery and carry a brick around in my pocket!

- What is your brightness setting at? The battery life on mine has been nothing but impressive so far. I'm talking about getting through the day will full bars impressive. The brightest your backlight should be set to while on battery is 7. The backlight is one of the biggest battery killers in phones.

- All slider phones of these kind have some play (UP/Down and sideways), its just normal. There is something you can do to tighten it up a little bit though. If you remove the battery cover, you'll see 3 screws. I tightened all of them up as much as I could and it has made a noticeable difference in slider quality. Its also made a drastic difference in the amount of flex you feel from hitting buttons on the top half of the phone as it touches the bottom.

- If you don't like the built in software, Cyberon Voice Speed Dial, you can seek other software. The most popular being Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 which works very well.

Thanks Vaxick for the reply. My brightness is on 4 (while on battery). It is probably due to using Wireless Sync and getting on average about 200 messages a day. I may change to have it pull every 30 minutes instead of push...

I'll try your tip on the 3 screws and see if that helps.

Thanks!

That would be a killer on any phone. Having the phone going online every 30 or so mins should help out as right now it is using the data constantly to check for messages. Pretty much like running something like a AIM/Yahoo/MSN client on your phone. They love to eat batteries on any phone because they keep needing to use your data connection.

Report back on the screws and tell me what you think of that. I just got really curious this week as to if tightening them as much as I could to see if I would notice any changes and have been very pleased.

@Vaxick -- Just tried the tightening the screws thing... holy S*#T i cant believe the difference it made! So much better now... very nice tip! kudos!

@CraigH -- I do an extreme amount of "push" data and basic phone usage per day as well, and I run my battery down very quickly. I really didn't want the size adage of the extended battery either, so i just bought another regular battery to swoop back and forth... but i must tell you, of all the things i have gotten to help me with my battery life/usage issue... THIS has be the best!
I know it's not a phone specific issue... i just use the hell out of my device and usage = battery drain. defenetely check this thing out... it's like an extra boost of life until you can get to power... i just love it!

Haha, glad to hear my little discovery is working for others. I dropped my phone one day and had a annoying amount of play between the top and bottom half when I was using the face keys. Curiosity got the best of me and I figured I might as well see if those screws would solve it at all. Pretty impressive how much a few extra twists on them make. Apparently they are not coming out the factory fully tightened.

I think the only thing that would make it better would be an extension cable to go from this little battery pack to the phone so you don't have to have it just hanging off it while on a call with out a headset. But to my knowledge and searching, they don't make such a beast. (female to male mini-usb extension cable)

If anyone ever sees one though, please keep me in mind and post back!
