Yes I got that icon. It is not a GPS icon. That icon means that your device is sending a signal to the cellular tower so that the tower can find your phone. The actual GPS to satellite connection is disabled on our phone. VZNavigator will work by getting its location from the cell towers. Unfortunately, the cell towers will check to make sure you have a VZNavigator account before it will send the correct signals. I don't think there is a hack to bypass this. The GPS chip is supposed there in the phone but it is probably only there to do the calculations for VZNavigator, there is no way to talk to the satellites to get real GPS.

I agree with the last part of what you said. But VZNavigator needs the phone's precise location for it to provide you with directions. I don't think that the location of the nearest cell tower with which the phone is communicating would be enough. That's why I think the GPS chip may be in there.

On the other hand, has anybody actually used VZNavigator on this phone? (I don't trust the Verizon customer service reps to always know what they're talking about.)

It doesn't just use 1 cell tower. It triangulates your location using multiple towers, just like GPS uses multiple satellite. This is the same feature that allows 911 to find you in an emergency.

(Sigh) OK, thanks. I was hoping it would have at least one of the two things I want - WiFi and GPS. I guess it is not to be.

Okay so i'm a noob here but I have had this phone for about 5 months. So far I have not had too much luck with the phone, but I love it as well. Ironic. I use the phone mostly for internet and txting. No programs installed other than live search. The problem I have is the phone starts to flicker after abut 10 minutes of web browsing and will kick you to the home screen meanwhile shutting down Iexplorer. Next issue is the phone tends to lock up periodically and the best of all is when the light flashes green but the phone does absolutely nothing (like its powered off) forcing me to pull the battery. Very rarely it will just turn off alltogether. This is my 2nd phone since purchase and I hoping you guys with your knowledge can give me some tips at least for the Iexplorer issues. I can cope with the rest if need be. Also has anyone had any problems selecting a links or tabs on a webpage. I have run into several pages where I see the link but I cant move the box over to select the link or tab. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I haven't experienced any of the problems you've described so I can't provide any exact help, but here are some thoughts.

For the flickering problem, I wonder if it might be your cache. 10 minutes of browsing can fill up the memory on your phone depending on the sites you are viewing. I moved my cache to my SD card so I have plenty of room for the cache and never noticed any problems.

I've had the phone freeze on me several times. It's just something phones do. If it is too often, you should try a master reset just to clear things out. Or again, it could be that your phone keeps running out of storage space and crashes. You could also have a bad phone. Since you are at 5 months, you can still get another phone.

I don't use IE anymore. I use to use Opera Mini but it is Java based and I couldn't get it set to be the default browser. It's a good program and goes right to the links. Opera Mobile should be similar but you have to buy it. I'm now using Skyfire. It's a new browser and currently free. Works similar to Opera Mini but has some quirks. Not bad thought.
