Anyone with a personal review of the smt5800 from vzw?
I just bought it, it's going to replace my Q that has some issues. I was trying to wait until it came out in stores so I could see it before biting the bullet and paying the $465 for it. Yeash!!! However I'm not very patient, and I don't think my Q is going to last much longer. lol.. Anyway... A couple of things if someone could, so I'm not surprised when it gets to my house.
Could someone take a picture of them holding the phone (so I can get and idea of the size) also a picture of it's side (thickness)
And maybe a picture or two that you've taken with the smt5800's camera.
Thanks for any help!!!
B

also I'm curious if you can respond to text message via the numeric pad on the front with something like T9. That would be great for quick texts...

Yes, you can use the front numeric key pad for messaging.
Also, the size is about the same as the BB Pearl but thicker.

SMT5800
A lot smaller than the Q.. no problems so far.. faster and crisper sound. i have been using both the keypad with t9 and full keyboard. battery life could be better but I have yet to adjust screen brightness, ect. have to get used to the smaller keys but easy to press. I like the key backlights. check out SMT5800 Verizon Smartphone for a comparison view to the i760 and xv6800.

I checked one out at the Verizon store yesterday. Small form factor, nice build quality. Then I check the memory. 128/64. Pass.

Had mine two weeks and I really like it
I was actively looking for a new handset from VZW that ran WM 6 around the first of the year so when the SMT5800 was announced I jumped at at right away..ordered it on line on Jan 10 and was delivered Jan 14. After two weeks of using it I really, really like this device.
After a couple years as a reasonably happy BB user (7130 tmobile) I was skeptical of WM6 but I must admit that it works really well on this device. Due to a change in jobs I had to move off the BB and onto a WM handset. Getting Outlook to synch including full calendar function was a piece of cake. Also getting my personal mail and text messages on this device in a separate section works a lot better than it did on my BB.
Screen is fantastic for clarity and brightness. Keyboards are really good too. I did have to fiddle with the backlight settings for timeout to keep the alpha keyboard backlighting on while using the browser...otherwise it is impossible to read the red characters that are accessed via the Fn key at night.
Best thing I did was download Opera Mobile as an alternative to IE. Much faster and more flexible for how to view pages.
I added an 8 GB Micro SD as soon as possible and now I'm even happier.
If it matters, be advised there is no flash for the built in 2 megapixel camera despite a statement on VZW website that it has flash.
I give this one a A.

New SMT5800
I was very close to sending it back a few days ago, but now that I have had a few days I am getting used to it. I came from a Treo 700P, and the lack of a touch screen was almost insulting for me. I love the phone, but the slider still feels a littel wierd when talking on the phone with it in your right hand. I think I will give it a few more days.

Ive had this phone for 24 hours now and I dont think I am going to keep it. The problems that I have are that one the phone feels cheap. The slider is a nice idea and it keeps it small but it feels cheap. when closed the phone has a slight rocking feel when pushing the front dial pad. This is the same way it was at the store but I tried it hoping the display model was just over used. I have a feeling it wont last through my 2 year contract.
My second complaint is the T9 text. You cant turn it off you can disable it for the box you are typing in but as soon as you move to a different text box its back on again. I cant say enough how much I hate this.
I have other smaller problems but those two I really dont like. I may have to go back to a treo even though I hate how big the phone is it feels soild and I know it will last. Also the keyboard is much much better on the treo.

I really wanted to like this phone
In fact, I was so excited that I ordered it a month before my new every two came up (my employer reimburses me for phones.) I owned it for a week before shipping it back to Verizon. I went back to my original Motorola Q (actually the third or fourth, after all of the exchanges because of quality control problems.) My problems with the SMT5800: (1) as another poster observed, very cheap quality (2) batter life is horrible - I use my phone mainly for e-mail and was having to recharge 1/2 way through the day (3) uncomfortable to hold and use - the keyboard was topheavy when opened and, my favorite (4) the power button was placed so that the phone would randomly shut off. The only thing I really liked about the phone was the size. At this point, I'm thinking of switching carriers because Verizon just doesn't have a quality smartphone that appeals to me ..... sigh

For the two posts above. Slider phones have play in them when they are closed. It's just the way it is because there has to be space between them and the keyboard so it won't rub all over the keys. The Samsung i760 does it and so does the XV6800. It's completely normal and after a while you get used to it.

My i760 has a very slight wiggle, almost undetectable, from side to side but absolutely no movement up and down when any front key is pressed. If this is the case with the 5800 it would bother me a lot.
