Just got my new SMT5800 from VZW today. I just came from a xv6800 which I had for only two weeks. During those weeks I customized it with HTC Home along other apps and registry tweaks. Now that I have the SMT5800, would I be able to use same HTC Home cab on it? Also, volume on the Bluetooth headset (Plantronics 855 is what I use) during phone calls seem really low compared to audio from music or video. Is there a audiopara file tweak on this like on the xv6800? Thanks.

From what I have read, WM6Pro apps will not work on WM6Std devices. There may be a similar HTC Home screen for Smartphones, tho. My i760 BT volume is low on Voice Command but OK during a call. Don't know of an audio tweak but then again I am ignorant of Smartphone tweaks. My philosophy is that if you want to tweak, get a WM6Pro device. If you don't want to tweak, get a WM6Std device and use pretty much "as is". Check out Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine and their website for apps, etc. that work on WM6std devices. Also Handango and PocketGear have stuff for the smartphone side.
I have waited a long time for the SMT5800. I finally broked down right before Christmas and bought the xv6800 because it seemed like the SMT5800 was never going to be released. I said watch, once I buy the xv6800, the SMT5800 would be releaseed. Low and behold, it was. Now that I have it, I'm not too impressed and it somewhat reminds me of my first smarphone the Moto Q. I really like the form factor, keyboard and number pad on the front but I am missing the tweakability of the xv6800 and the touchscreen. I will continue to play with both and decide which one I want to keep. Luckily I have til the 19th to return the xv6800.
There are plenty of smartphone tweaks out there, but like pro devices most of the tweaks are device specific. Be patient, someone will have stuff available soon. Some of SuperDave's stuff for the PN-820 may work. We will have to wait and see if he has ideas as well. Trust me, I have had a number of devices, there will soon be a number of Registry hacks and tweaks.
the smartphones (5800, Q's) are highly tweakable and there are many great programs and hacks out there for them.
wtherrell is correct - wm6 pro programs will not work with wm6 standard (except for a small few).
forevr5688, you wont be able to use the touch homescreen program but if you get sbsh's facade and papyrus you can easily customize and tweak your homescreens - go to SBSH Mobile Software - Making smaller bigger to get the software and then on their forum there is a huge thread under facade resources where there are hundreds of homescreens including one that mimics the touch. here is the link to that forum: SBSH Mobile Software Forums -> Facade resources
no, i dont work for sbsh but i am just a big supporter and user of their software. i also see that they just released sbsh weather for smartphone today which easily integrates with facade on your homescreens.
hopefully that helps...
i came from the 6700 to the Q9m. i thought i would really miss the tweaks of the 6700 and the touchscreen, but the more i use the Q9 i'm starting to prefer it over my old beloved ppc. there are still more advanced things i wish it could do, but in general is a great, fast phone. definitely better as a phone, too.
i came from the Sammy i730 to the old Q, and now the Q9m - i dont miss the touch screen at all! i also think that the smartphone OS needs less tweaking out of the box than the touchscreen devices so it is definitely strange at 1st...
Thanks all for your suggestions. As I use the phone more today, I am beginning to like it more. I will try these sites and test these apps. They do look very promising. One thing that I did notice though, the battery life didn't seem to last as long as the xv6800.
I think the earpiece is louder than the xv6800 in its stock form. After I changed the audiopara file on the 6800, it really improved. Bluetooth volume could still use some help on both phones.
Morning, I've had the 5800 (VZW) for a couple days after 2.5 years with the XV6700. I love this thing, my personal list of Pros:
- SMALL: this is smaller than the LG EnV. Comfortable to use without bluetooth
- Great phone. with the keypad I just start typing, it finds my contact, and I can either call, email or Text from there!
- Again, like the front keypad
- Very good performance, faster than my old 6700 for menus and features
Cons
- bit of a loose battery cover, calling VZW about this today
- trying to see if I can get all my messages in one line on Home Screen
email (0) Text (1) voicemail (3) (like the Moto Q9M WM6)
- if anyone has ideas on this one, it would be appreciated
To Test:
- Tether via USB, worked great on my 6700, still need to configure for this
- battery life, will post back later on this one, once I'm back to normal usage
Ok, So far I can say that the form factor on this thing is great but if you have large hands, forget about this phone. I have been using the vx6700 for two years and love the slide out keyboard, this one is tough. I will give it the 30 days to get used to it, but right now I need help getting this thing tethered. I will not pay the extra $15 for vzw access and I had not problem connecting my 6700 using a generic usb cdma modem but I can't figure this one out. I am connecting to the device fine, but I am not getting on to the network with the same passwords. Does anyone know the trick to using the new modem link feature or is there a way to enable the old dun?

you need to edit the xml code in your homescreen file. here is how you do it...
while your 5800 is hooked up via active sync you need to go into your 5800 via your pc and once in goto "application data", then "home" that is where all of your homescreen files are. find the xml file of the one you are using - it will be named xxxxxxx.home.xml (the x's will be the name). you then need to copy the file over to your pc to edit it. once you do that, open it with goodl old notepad. you then need to look for the messages plugin section and a line that will look something like this: <text lang="0x0409">Email <unreadMsgs name="ActiveSync" /></text>
you then need to edit that line to read like this: <text lang="0x0409">Email <unreadEmail/></text>
to learn more about homescreen editing and programs that help you create custom homescreens i suggest you go to the facade resources forum on the sbsh software website - SBSH Mobile Software Forums -> Facade resources
there is a lot of cool screens on there and a lot of help. many of the users on there have s710's and s730's (the gsm versions of the 5800) and have created tons of screens that work with the portrait to landscape switching.
hopefully that helps you.

alot of people use some software called pdanet. i think it costs like $30 but it works!
I use PdaNet and it rocks. As soon as I connect my phone to my laptop, I get a little pop up asking me if I want to connect to the internet. It also does bluetooth dun as I use it with my Nokia N800 Internet Tablet.

Can anyone help me.
If i could do it i would like to set up a set list of applications on the 5800 home screen (today screen, etc.) instead of just the scrolling ones that come up and go away as you use them or not. Any Help is appreciated
